Last couple of days the temp gauge as only been going upto 1/4 where is has sat just under 1/2 way for the past 2 years but today after a 6 mile drive it was still at the bottom of the gauge:eek: left the engine running whilst the missus popped into the shops where it did creep upto 1/4 again & after another 5 miles of driving the gauge did make it to normal running temp. Checked how hot the hose going to the rad whilst the missus was in the shops & it was just warm but once it did get upto temp the top hose was hot so think the thermostat has stuck open:doh going to pick up a new thermostat in an hour & have gone for the 88'c one:thumbs not the 81. Now it's been 8 years since I last replaced a thermostat on a T2 & can't remember if you fit the gasket dry or you should use some sealer on it ?:nenau got some blue instant gasket in my toolbox so if it's needed i'll use that. Just praying the thermostat housing doesn't crack as i've got the plastic one:doh

Cheers Banshee mines running cool luckily but know the water pump is getting to that age when it's going to need replacing but for now it's not leaking but I keep checking it:thumb2 I'm sure my last T2 did the same & replacing the stat with a 88'c one sorted it out & it did warm up faster:D if i've read it right on the manual the thermostat housing should be torqued down to 25-28Nm:nenau going to torque it down due to it being a plastic housing:doh

Just changed the thermostat & it seems to be getting to normal temp again & the heaters seem to have become hotter:clap just got to check it again once it cools down to see if there are any water leaks:doh what has shocked me is Nissan hadn't fitted a gasket under the top housing:eek: well it has one now plus some instant gasket:lol oh & it had a 88'c thermostat fitted

Blast looks as if i've got a leak from the back left hand bolt (the really long one) any ideas on how to stop it ? all bolts are tight apart from stripping it all down again & replacing the gasket & putting more sealer on the only things I can think of is putting some rad weld in the system or taking this bolt out & covering it with instant gasket

You may not have run the instant gasket on the inner side of the bolt holes, on both sides of the gasket.
So water comes up the thread of the bolt.
Personally I would drain it to a bucket below the stat level, dry out, start again...
Do you need the gasket material to cure a while before putting it to use?

Personally I would refit the housing with some more instant gasket rather than using radweld.

The instant gasket dry quite quickly & gave it some time before starting it up & i'm sure I got the bolt holes on the paper gasket covered & it didn't seem to be leaking with the engine running. TBH did think about undoing this bolt & covering the top park of it in instant gasket & tightening it down to hopefully seal it up. Stripping it all down is going to be a bit of a pain as i've got the plastic housing so cleaning that up isn't going to be fun & scared it'll end up cracking:(

Ok how about seeing if you can get a metal housing from a breakers and get a new gasket or gasket paper. Then do the job again with the better housing?
