Hi everyone - new to the club tonight!
I'm picking up my '98 terrano 2 tomorrow and am keen to give it the once over once I have it in my mucky paws. Have given it the general ok before agreeing to buy, but want to give it a proper health check before I really start using and abusing.

Am keen to do the usuals, replace coolant, oil, filters, pads etc etc. But what else should I really keep an eye out for to make sure she gives me the reliable service I'm looking for?

Any help would be much appreciated - as I'm more than a bit wet behind the ears when it comes to the 4x4 world!

Cheers
Will no doubt be back on here all week with daft questions!

As well as the engine oil its worth doing the gearbox, transfer box and diff oils.

Box/trans - API GL4
Front diff - API GL5
Rear Diff - API GL5LS

The rear diff oil especially makes a big difference to how the truck handles both on and off the road, well worth putting the correct stuff in, its been known for even dealers to put non LSD oil in.

In all probabbility it will be 'spot on' and you wont need any technical advice, if so check through the threads and you will see we are all here for much more than just 4x4 advice, there is something for everyone!

Welcome to 'the' club!

Welcome.

As it says in Mav's link if the engine is gutless it will be the MAF. Its the airflow sensor between the airfilter and turbo. It measures as the name suggests air flow. If it's not working your engine feels like has no turbo. Its been known for people to buy a T2 and think its crap due to this problem, so if you don't know of the problem you just think the engine won't pull the skin off a custard.

Easy way to check it is to unplug it and see if the car feels gutless. If there is no change the MAF is knackered.

Some people say clean it don't waste your time as it won't last long. There are 2 types on the T2, bosch and hitachi. The bosch are the most common and cost between £35 & £100 depending on where you get it. The hitachi costs lots more, but I can't remember anyone having to change one, I believe they cost upwards of £350!!!!!

You can easily tell which one you have as the names are maked on the outside. There is a test procedure in the downloads and it show's a bosch MAF.

Enjoy your new toy

Cheers for all the pointers guys! Cant wait till the pick up tomorrow afternoon.......
Is changing the diff oil a difficult job btw?

No very easy, take your truck for a spin to get the diff hot, park on level ground, loosen filler plug on top of diff 1st to make sure you can refill it with a 1/2" rachet, then remove the lower drain plug. I sprayed the plugs a few days before hand with wd40. As for the front one I don't know as i've not done that one yet

As Sweety said, very easy to do the back diff. done mine a few weeks back.
Just make sure you get the right gear oil with the Limited Slip Differential on it!!
Welcome to the club

Front diffs the same procedure but you have to remove the front ash guard to get at it and its a pig to get the oil back in cos every things in the way but not that much trouble rally.

Be careful removing the self tappers that hold the bash guard on, they have a habit of shearing. clean off.
