I can't seem to get to the bottom of this one - what years were the Terranos fitted with a standard LSD axle? I have tried searching the forums but can't find a definitive answer.

Is there a chassis number break point for example?

I'm on the hunt for a Terrano but want as much info as possible before travelling to look.

From 1993 -2002/3 in 2004'ish they changed the rear axle but some did get the LSD some didn't:augie still no idea if i've got one fitted to my 55 plate or not:doh but it's a terrano so it'll still beat a disco 2 off road:thumbs

So from looking up my 3.0 on this mine has a C200X axle with Lsd:thumbs

Looking through some more it seems like the earlier car eg. 2.7td and petrol some have, some don't. The later models seem to be a case of identifying which lsd axle you have. It doesn't seem to have a definitive chassis number cut off on this list though. There's surely some visual difference though, I believe one holds more gear oil than the other?

My 1994 certainly has an lsd, as do every other early Terrano I've come across here in Spain (and there are lots of them).

as far as I have seen there are two diff types fitted to T2's one with the removable cover plate on the rear, (later ones I think) the other the whole lump comes out from the front, both are LSD, if you find one that is not LSD then it probably was but the clutch plates have failed, Rick

Yes Rick it seems the C200 BC/X has the removable back plate like mine and is smaller to look at with a 200mm ring gear so holds less oil. Difference between a BC and X must be the ratios as one seems to be used on the 2.7 and the other on the 3.0. The other is the H233B with a 233mmring gear used in the older models. Though from what I can gather some of the first 2.7td and petrol might have a C200 but with an open diff which I think might have been fitted to the old d21 pickups too. Theres probably plenty running around that have never had the diff oil changed or the wrong stuff put in and I'd imagine the spring plates will probably get weak too over time.

Nissan did some cost cutting on the later ones & didn't fit an LSD, think it was Terranosaurus who found the info out quiet a few years back. Mine if I jack one side up the wheel in the air won't turn at all (out of gear, handbrake off) but on grass the N/S/R wheel will spin easily the reason i'm unsure on mine & can't see the clutch plates being worn out at 54K was just the same when I got it with 51K on the clock

From what I've read on a Patrol forum fitting the C200 diff was part of the cost cutting as its said to be lighter duty unit but the variants they used BC/X are still LS and even use the same clutch plates as the H233B. Best way if you want to know for sure would be to take the backplate off when you next change the oil and have a look, only 8 bolts to come out if your careful with the gasket.

if you get one wheel off the ground put a 3ft bar on a wheel nut and another with just a short socket extension arrange them so the long bar is one side of wheel centre and socket the other with the long bar pressing against the socket extension and push you should be able to turn the wheel with a bit of effort, it should be smooth, if ratchet y then the oil needs changing, Rick

All very good information, thanks. I think the general opinion is that everything after 1996 had the LSD axle and you'd be very unlucky to find one pre 1996 that didn't have one.

That makes life a bit easier.
