Hi - I have a 1995 T2 with 176k, and the steering box is definitely a bit slack. Is there any way to adjust the box, or does anyone know if reconditioned boxes are available? I'm in East Sussex if there's a local answer!

Thanks

Soggy

Might be worth checking the linkages - someone like Extreme who's been underneath recently in that area will tell you, but I think there are several linkages/bushes, especially between steering wheel and n/side...

There is an adjustment in the steering box that you can carefully adjust.

It is an adjusting screw with a locking nut on the front, top of the steering box, just below the front of the battery, bit of a pig to get to but doable, I have done them from below before.
With the wheels in a straight ahead position release the lock nut and screw in the adjusting screw until it touches, do not apply any force, then slacken back a ¼ of a turn, or there about, nip the lock nut up temporarily.
Jack up the front of the car and test the steering from one full lock to the other making absolutely sure there is no tight spots at all, if there are any tight spots the adjusting screw will need to be undone further until the steering is free throughout its entire travel, a very small adjustment will make all the difference. When happy tighten lock nut and check steering once again before road testing.
This should help reduce free play at the steering wheel it wont make it perfect due to the uneven wear in the box but should improve it significantly.

Please ensure the steering is free, any tight spots will result in the steering not self-centring and may cause an accident.

top post Toolbox, exactly same remedy on the Trooper.

i have some slack on my 1993 terrano, will this remedy be the same on my steering box if the ball joints and linkages are ok?
