Just had my 98 Terrano for an MOT and it failed on rust at inner and outer sills on all four corners within 30cm of a suspension point - or something like that. Also rust in front wheel arch within 30 cms of suspension. Is mine an exception, or are they all like that? The garage person said that mine was the only one they had seen like that. I thanked her very much, as it made me feel a lot better. Superficially the car looks pretty good. Is it worth getting it welded or is it likely to spread all over? Estimate given by garage for welding is about £300, subject to re-evaluation on closer inspection.
Yours ecstatically,
John

hi john, i think you will find it a common problem for t2, along with the rear seat belt mounts, without seeing the rot, the price seems reasonable, as they wont know how bad the corrosion is untill they clean and grind the area, you normally find the area of rot increases. :doh

where do sills come with in 30 cm odf suspension when its on a seperate chassis.

surely not same issue as with a monoque?

It's to do with the proximity of the body mountings, they're not far apart from each other, let alone the rot:doh

I think you are all missing the point, this just proves how environmentaly friendly a T2 is, not corrosion, not rust, but simply bio-degrading! returning to nature from whence it came. Try doing that with tesco's carrier bags and you cant weld them either, so on the green front T2's win again! :clap

or king Alfred's knife, just one new blade away from originality :lol

That's what I thought, but obviously tester thinks differently. Would appear not to be an unknown problem in view of all the replies. However, at the moment it doesn't seem to be terminal, so I'll probably shell out my 300 notes and get another year's use.
Resignedly,
John

:eek::eek:
Well my oldie is sound no rot :thumbs
passed 2 mots with me and the garage says its sound rot wise:thumbs
It starts first time and dose the job:)

Had mine for nearly nine years, got it just over 5 years old and to be fair it's been a good motor that has suffered crap mechanics and just suffering that now.
However back on subject, MOT 2008 had to have the rear seat belt mounts welded (inside rear wheel arch). Then MOT 2009 I knew that I would have to have the rear of the sills done on both sides. This turned out to be inner and outer sills. The only other section of welding that is likely to need doing is the front inner wing footwell area but as yet not failed a test. In spring I'm hoping to find time to give these areas a good clean and all being well a simple under seal. Think these are the only weak spots so should last a good few years without much more welding but at the end of the day I'd rather someone spot it needs doing as it's the safety of my family! I couldn't botch up and flog on to soneone else! how would I feel if the fality that bought it were killed?

Rest of the motors are reasonably bullet proof I think, I got a couple of problems at the mo which I'm gonna post about later but all being well not too serious.

Still love the car to bits.

Remember an awful lot of these trucks were parallel imports (places like Motorpoint and TradeSales sold the Terrano and Patrol as a PI for years), meaning that some of them (not all) would have been destined for warmer climes where undersealing wasn't required.

So don't be too mad at them :):thumb2

I don't mind getting the welding done properly so that it will last, only worried in case worse rust appears elsewhere in the near future. I don't think mine was a parralel import, as I have the original documentation and it came from a Nissan dealer.
I think the Terranos were manufactured in Spain ? If that is so then it may account for poorer build quality than if made in Japan. This happens with some models of Honda motor bike which are built in Spain, the build quality is not a patch on the home produced stuff,
