Hi,

Could not see a correct board in the Terrano section, so will post my question here.

I have had a HiLux Surf many years ago, but had to sell it and my Honda Blackbird to fund my business start up in 2007 - sad day Sad

Now by chance I have a opportunity to buy a family members 2001 Y plate Terrano SE+ 2.7 auto diesel. He is getting on in years and now cannot drive it anymore. He has had it from new and it has only done 44k miles and only 200 miles since the last MOT which has just run out and has stood for the rest of that time. I have had a look at it and it's a typical farmers vehicle, tools everywhere and not cleaned for eons. The only body work issue I could see was the front wings just above the arch trims. The NS has a patch of lurgy under the paint and the OS has less. The under side look rusty, new full exhaust last year and two new tyres. It had not been run for some months, but started on the first turn. He just wants a return on the new parts so looking for £500. He surprised me in saying that for that money he will put a fresh MOT on it Shocked It has tax to October this year.

What am I letting myself in for if I decide to buy it? What are the points to look for - bad/good?

The heater fan switch only works on number 4, but I thing that should just be a resistor pack (wherever that is) and the LCD display works 'sometimes', but that looks like a very expensive repair.

I know that I'm not going to get very good MPG, but it won't be a day to day vehicle, what should I expect?

Is there a workshop manual available for this truck?

What are the running costs and are the servicing/parts reasonable price wise?

Any links to where to get service and other parts.

Thanks again,
Steve

Rust rust and rust. Check the sills. Common area. Also wings as you mentioned are common too. These are main issues. Prone to rust. But v v reliable engines, go on for ever. Could bring you many many happy years of motoring. Also most run on veg :D :thumb2

I've only been here since January and you can see my posts :lol

Welcome and enjoy sir!

Thanks Alex,

Tenner spent :D

As I have said the family member is putting a fresh MOT on it for me for the same money - £500 :clap

So hopefully any sill/rust issues 'should' be detected...

He's got good bits then ;)

If/when I get it and for the money/fresh MOT I'm sure I will get it, I'd like to put my touch on it, a few bits and bobs etc.

Bull bar
Window deflectors

Like I have on my good old HiLux Surf...

About 28mpg

Is there a workshop manual available for this truck?

http://bebrs.pie-dabas.net/Webs/Terrano/R20/fwd.pdf and check what section you want and then substitute the "fwd.pdf" for "mt.pdf" etc.

Any links to where to get service and other parts.

http://www.milneroffroad.com/ is a good place to start fro service parts

no rust on mine:D

Bloody hell at that price with a full mot and a known good history it's perfec :thumbs

CNCFABS but there are one or two other members breaking them too.

Just done a quick Ebay Search for the wind deflectors, these are exactly the same as mine and fit just fine http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190829299732

Front wings yes that's what they do, as said check sills and also rear seat belt mounts which are the bolts in the rear wheel arches. If it goes through MOT then they'll be fine but do treat them if they are showing signs.

Make sure 4WD working too, don't use 4WD on a hard surface or it'll break.

All the best you lucky sod getting it so cheap and probably make your uncles day knowing it's gone to a family member too.

Thanks guys for the warm welcome to the forum :thumb2 and offers to take this one off my hands... sorry... IT'S MINE!!!

When I get it, I will be asking a load of daft questions, please bear with me.

Why not start now...

Can you get a hard copy workshop manual and owners manual?

Does this model have twin batteries? (My surf did)

There, that will get the ball rolling. I will search the forum, I promise :augie
