I had my air mass sensor replaced in Switzerland during Summer 2008 after the old one went duff on me. As I was returning home through Holland I hit torrential rain and the car developed the same symptoms as when the air mass sensor went previously - understandably I was a bit put out by this since it had only just been replaced, however I pulled over, let the sensor dry for a bit, unplugged it, reconnected it, and tried starting the engine. Happily it ran fine and has not missed a beat throughout the rest of the year.

I again went over to the continent for Xmas and New Year - the car performed superbly in all conditions including deep snow and thick ice on narrow mountain roads. I drove back from the French Alps on Saturday - 770 miles on motorways at a steady 80mph. When I got off the ferry I was greeted with torrential downpours. Once again, after a few miles in these conditions, the engine lost power and demonstrated all the signs of the air mass sensor packing in. Again, I thought it was due to the sensor effectively 'drowning'. I pulled over, allowed the sensor to dry out, restarted the car and she ran fine. Unfortunately the downpour continued and I had to pull over several times on the way down the road. On arriving in Southampton the car was performing fine, then, when pulling away from traffic lights there was a massive reduction in power and I stalled. On restarting the engine there was no problem. This happened several times until I was back on the motorway. Upon arriving on base though the same thing happened - I parked the car, thinking the problem would resolve itself once the sensor had dried out.

I went to shift the car today. There were no warning lights upon start-up (apart from the windown washer indicator coming partially on), and the engine started fine, apart from a slight hiccup, which I put down to the engine being cold. I depressed the accelerator and was rewarded with the engine speeding up (as would be expected). I engaged reverse (in 2wd mode), turned the wheel, gave it some throttle, let out the clutch and... she stalled. I restarted the engine, did the same thing again, only this time, when I depressed the throttle the engine remained at idle. Understandably I was concerned. I restarted the car, managed to get her moving purely on tickover, such that I could see how markedly bad her performance was - she was showing no power from the throttle and little drive from idle (even when we all know those engines pull strongly even with the throttle at idle).

I then disconnected the air mass sensor to see what the difference was - there was no discernible difference, leading me to suspect the sensor was once again duff. I reconnected it and the car's performance immediately returned, though only momentarily - I had full power for a few seconds and then lost it again. She is now sitting, looking forlorn, while I try to figure out what the problem is - I'm an engineer so I'm not sitting here guessing!

The car has only done around 6,000 miles since the sensor was last replaced.

Has anyone else encountered this problem, and does anyone know what the solution is (either to the obvious problems encountered in torrential rain (not generally an ideal problem for a 4x4 which is supposedly built for those conditions), or to the overall problem with the air mass sensor) - I'd really rather not replace the sensor (though nissan would receive the sharp end of my tongue!), mainly because it only postpones the problem.

Many thanks.

Piggy back a DVM onto pin3 and earth and monitor the MAF's output.

You should have 0.7v engine off, 1.2v or so engine at idle, and rising progressively to 4.5v at anything over about 2600rpm and full throttle. - thats with a 100% healthy MAF.

Might be wise to check the 5v supply and the 0v at the maf too.

Check the earth connections on the cylinder head just by the intercooler also- these are paramount for the ecu.

Tim.

am i right in assuming your air filter is getting wet when this happens ?
cos to suck water in to the maf its got to be getting wet air filter

so if thats the case you can check the air supply it only goes through the wing a little way , im guessing your either letting water in the wheel arch if the plastic is it broken or cracked above the wheel
the other thing you could be lacking is the rubber sheet between the wheel and the engine. its quite important you have one

the air supply has the entry through the wing and a drain hole on the bottom of the air box to let any water out i blocked mine for extreme air

if its not getting the air filter wet then you have an electric fault or the maf itself is getting excessively wet you could try sealing it i did mine with cling film and lots of insulation tape

very annoying these problems which "come and go", was a service engineer for over 40 years
and I always preferred machines that were "broke". I don't think the problem is the maf because I understand they still run when faulty, even if badly. You may have two problems
one a loose connection possibly on the fly by wire throttle, the other in the rain if you think water is drawn into the air intake could make the filter so sodden that air couldn't be drawn through it, if water was hitting the maf so badly I would have thought that water would get drawn into the engine with disastrous consequences... this didn't happen. Check the air intake and if it happens again take out the filter and examine it, You could borrow a working maf but there are two different makes which are not interchanagable.....good luck

regards...bri

just a though, where is your ecu? mine is under the centre console, others are elsewhere perhaps in a position to get wet in a water leak....

hi ninja jim
The problem you have as happened to me on three occaison. The last time was this week-end returning from Tunbridge wells in torrential rain running at 50mph kept me going this time. I had a break at peterbourgh service area, when set of again the rain had stop and the motor ran normal the rest of the way home. The following day it started first time tic over fine put my foot on the throttle nothing in increase in revs

Today I tried again this time it will run but there very little power diconnected maf sensor ran alot better. replaced maf sensor and everthing seems back to normal.

I am not looking forward to the next motorway jounery in torrential rain. I have a k&n air filter What airfilter do you have.

Update

The maf sensor I replaced after my last problems with the rain had only been on for 9 months so I decided to give it a clean and put it back on. I blasted it with Wynn’s electrical contact cleaner and let it drip dry. Well it has been back on the motor for two weeks now without any trouble.

The maf sensor must have been contaminated or it would not work after cleaning. When I have the problem in torrential rain, I do not get any warning lights so assume the ecu does not recognise any fault.

Anybody got any ideas

I would be interest to know ninji Jim as found a solution yet

Not many problems with the MAF will illuminate the MIL, even wont come on when it is disconnected

Update

Hi All
Here is my latest troubles, I started the motor this morning backed of the drive and it went into tick over mode, switched the engine off and then back on again then I have full power, came to the road junction where I had to stop. Engine went back into tick over mode switched engine off and back on again then I have full rev again. Very strange?

Anyway made it back home put my new maf sensor back on disconnected battery for an hour and know its running normal again.

Therefore, it looks like all the trouble I have had is down to the maf sensor so with the new one I should be ok for at least the next 9 months

This is my fourth bosch maf sensor in five years the man at Nissan said they had now modified them lets hope he’s right.

Funny things these MAFs; I had a new Ford Maverick (aubergine coloured - still can't believe I did that!) for 70k miles, never had a problem. We've had the T2 the wife drives since new and its done 161k miles now, never had a MAF problem. The only things I've done is (i) never touched it, and (ii) always drive the truck hard.....if I got more than 25mpg on the autobox T2 it was because I'd fallen asleep....

Just the luck of the draw I guess, but FOUR of the blasted things?! Thats just painful!

Had Similar Problem at Christmas.........

Hi, Had an almost identical problem at xmas, towing a trailer in torrential rain, sudden power loss to tickover, etc etc. Recovered to Nissan main dealer, changed airflow meter, said all was fixed, drove 2 miles, total power loss again, changer airflow for another, same problem 10 days and £1500 later, turned out that the problem was 1st airflow meter AND turbo acctuator that kept releasing? Hope that makes sense to you and helps.

On another note, of to Td5alive / alive tuning in Grimsby tomorrow for a remap, will let you know how she goes afterwards

Graham
