Took my Terrano in for its MOT today. As the title says it failed miserably ! I'll post a pic up of what it failed on. The thing is the garage want £700 for the repairs and are saying it'll need new drive shafts or at the very least 1 due to whatever else it is that's worn ? Not sure if the repairs are beyond my capabilities or whether I should just tackle the jobs myself. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

So it needs two drop links for the rear arb, cheap from milners and relatively easy to fit, a worn bush in shock absorber I think can be replaced by itself and not need new shock, I've never touched the cv's on mine but there obviously will be people on here that have done theirs, that's just the sort of forum this is :thumb2 and I think jimsterrano is tackling his at the mo.

I say go for it, it will probably save you 550/600 squids innit :D:thumbs

The garage is somewhat over zealous me thinks.

Fog lamp bulb
Anti rollbar links are nothing too difficult
Why drive shafts? I had both outer cv boots replaced for £150 including a top ball joint that the bolts snapped on.
Shocker shouldn't be too difficult, top bolt can be a little trick to reach but back and forth with the socket so you don't snap the bolts and they submit easy. Only advice on the shocker is if you replace one side I think it's good practice to replace both and then you keep the car balanced and even.

Take it elsewhere for a quote and hopefully take it back to be retested within 7 working days and you get a test for nowt. If you feel up to having a go at fixing yourself then there will be people on here to offer advice at every stage.

I don't if it's the same everywhere but my garage says TEN working days. I took my van in a fortnight ago for mot, took it back in today for re-test :thumb2

Cheers for the advice guys. Yes it's 10 working days at the garage, so gives me a bit of time. I use it for work and towing my trailer so don't want it off the road for to long anyway and have another vehicle I can use in the meantime. Are any of these parts worth a heavier duty upgrade from the standard ones that are fitted for more longevity ?

I suppose if you do a lot of heavy towing it might be worth fitting some adjustable rear shocks :nenau

All the work is at the front end, one jacking operation, front end lifted and secured, if I was doing it, I'd need a day, but I can't do these jobs now. The cv gaiters will be the challenge, but many guys have done these.
Don't be tempted to use the stick on type.

I recon someone who has done the cv gaiters could quote you a better time, then add an hour for the drop links.

All these parts are standard wearing parts, you are just unlucky that they have all been picked up at the same time. If you get chance, have a look at the last MOT and look at the advisories, I doubt all has happened in the last 12 months, unless the MOT tester was a friend :augie

Effin rip off, nearly £300 for front shaft gaiters? they can be done in situe an hour a side, all the other stuff couple of hours max, Rick

If you do not need 4 wheel drive then remove the shafts and I will send you a couple of dummy CVJ' to fill the front bearing hole, you can send me your shafts for me to fit new boots, loads cheaper than £300, Rick

Cheers Rick much appreciated. I've got another mate with access to a garage at weekends who's going to give me a quote for parts and labour. Same as everyone else suggested he can't see why it'd need new driveshafts :thumbs

I feel a happy ending coming on and yet again the club saves its fellow members a dam site more than a years membership costs.

Let us know how goes:thumbs

Hopefully Jim ! Still contemplating trying to do it myself  Can I ask if it's worth replacing any other parts at the same time as the parts I need to replace, whilst everythings off ?
