Hi all my gearbox has wine in 5th gear only any suggestions on what it could be
Doing my head in don't like putting it in 5th

Have you tried changing gear oil and making sure correct spec oil goes back in. Personally I would be checking the old oil for any metal shavings too.

Well for a start a whine is not something too important to worry about, more important is over a period of time (measure it) does it get worse or stay the same, these boxes are real hardy although your later model may have suffered some cost cutting like all post 2000 models but I am unaware of any box issues, Rick

Oil change might help but ...............

Not sure on your particular model but with most 5 speed gearboxes 4th is a 1:1 drive ratio.

When you put it into 5th gear the final ratio will be something like 0.9:1 the result of this is that the layshaft bearing is rotating but it does not in 4th.

This puts a load on the layshaft bearing giving a whine if oil levels and grade are not spot on or if the bearing is starting to fail.

If it is the start of bearing failure you will find metal debris /filings in the oil when you change it
If you are in gears below 4th the layshaft will be turning faster and the noise might be hidden due to greater rotation speed and torque effects.

Just my thoughts.

Gearbox oil

Hi all what is the right amount of gearbox oil I need to put in my Nissan Terrano 3lt manual as people keep telling me different amounts thanks

only one way to find out, drain it and then fill it to the level plug hole, it will be around 5 Ltr make sure it is GL4, Rick

There are 2 plugs, one on the bottom for draining, and one on the side for filling/level... Make sure you check you can undo the one on the side, before you drain it out, as they can be very tight, and you don't want to drain it, then find you can't re-fill it.
