most of the time my speedo works fine but recently ive noticed it stuck on 20mph when ive gotta doing 40 it stays there till i stop then drops to zero, next time its probably fine again .. could it be speedo packing up or poss electrical

Mine has a similar problem, on mine it's the counterbalance weight on the back end of the indicataor needle occasionalily binding on the black platic facia behind it. The frequency of the problem changes with temperature as the facia shifts slightly. One day I may fix it!

ive noticed its when ive been on motorways touched 75 or 80 then it goes crazy till i turn ignition off then its fine again unless im doing 80 again ......very strange :confused:

In that case I'd start by checking the wiring and connectors from the VSS at the transmission as this is the the most hostile environment. There may be an intermittent connection around there that is made worse by vibration etc at speed....
The VSS signal finds it way to the speedometer it then goes to the ECU, which suggests the VSS signal may be ok as the ECU is able to throw a DTC if the VSS signal is out of range. But would probably miss short duration events.

Which points to yet another lousy connection/solder joint in the instrument pod.
