Hello all,

I have a really nice T2 2.4 on a T reg. 67k miles

I need to get to the bottom of this problem that I am having cos its been bugging me for a while now.....

The car just will not hold on in the wet which is making driving in the british summertime a dangerous pastime ! The back end comes loose as soon as a bit of power is added .........

The Rear Diff is getting hot and when the rear is off the ground both rear wheels are hard to turn by hand.
With one rear wheel down the other is hard to turn round but goes easy in places !?

Was thinking bearings but I have no bad bearing noise from the rear ......

Tried a few different diff oils but no change.......

The wife is going to be using it next week so I have to get to the bottom of this asap cos she will end up spinning it every 5 minutes !

Any Ideas ?

If a front hub was stuck would that cause this kind of problem ?

I am a good DIY mechanic so dont hold back !

What oil have you been putting in the diff :?: The rear diff's on these is fitted with a LSD & needs an certain type of oil sorry can't think off hand but it has been covered many times on here  Am I right in thinking you are saying you can have one rear wheel on the ground & the one in the air & the one in the air you can turn by hand 8O :? if this is the case it should'nt be happening as the LSD should lock up the rear axle.

One wheel on the ground and the other is hard to turn by hand .

Which is right as an LSD should hold on to a point and then let go .....
Right ?

But this diff just seems to be driving both wheels all of the time regardless.

I have been using LSD specific oil but I will try another oil when I change tomorrow .

Not 100% on LSD's and the way they work .......

I assume that there are plates in the diff that slip at some point and the wrong oil can stop them from working ?

Jon

IIRC they have a few plates a bit like clutch plates inside & when there is to much slip on one wheel the plates lock up & both wheels will turn at the same speed, but i'm sure someone will be along soon who can tell you better than me  If I have one wheel on the ground & the other in the air, I can not turn the one in the air.

My first thoughts were your oil too, def use LSD Oil. There are several previous threads on this subject if you do some digging you will find them. Mine was a bit wick in the wet too until I changed the oil, now it isn't as much fun

Thanks loads....

I will try another LSD oil tomorrow.

I just got back from a Motorcycle trip around Europe and N Africa to find that she had run the People Carrier for 30 miles with hardly any water in it !

So now I loose the T2 and she will no doubt bugger that up as well ! :(

Oh well !?

I also find it critical to make sure that the tread depth on the rear tyres is the same, and the same type and same pressures.
Saves the rear diff working overtime.
I used coma LSD oil. If you use any other non LSD oil, you may have to run the rear diff on LSD ! for a few miles say 50 + and then drain and refill with more LSD.
My back end was always sliding on wet roundabouts.
Also if you have less than 3mm of tread they tend to be tail happy.
best regards, Rustic

Well .......

The rear tyres are more road based than the front so there is something in that isnt there i.e. the front maybe gripping better than the rear

I was thinking that it might take a few oil changes to flush any crap oil out of the the diff......

Many thanks

No - if th diff is working correctly it should be virtually impossible to turn one wheel without the other turning, if I tried it with mine it would probably push its self forward off the jack/stand before one wheel turned without the other. With lock applies in carparks etc I find that the truck slow down as the two rear wheels fight each other when the diff locks, on loose surfaces with lock on you can here one of the wheels slipping.

A plate/clutch type LSD allows a small amount of difference in rotational speeds between te 2 wheels any more and it will lock, viscous LSDs will act similarly only they lock gradually, gear LSDs (Suretrac etc) never actually lock and don't do anything if one wheel is i the air (cross axled etc) or on sheet ice etc

If the rear tyres are more road biased tan the front they will have more grip on tarmac than the fronts - so its unlikely to be that - worth checking your pressures though.

May take a couple of hundred miles of running to clean the rubbish off the friction plates if its been running on the wrong oil for a while after that a simple change should be enough.

Thats what I was trying to say

I will sort it out no doubt at all, I've just not had the time what with being away.
Just hope she dunt spin the thing between oil changes ........

Where does the T2 stand on brake testing on MOT's ?

I had an Audi Coupe Quattro that the MOT bloke nearly put on the brake tester once ( Permanent 4WD ) 8O

How does the diff behave on the brake test i.e. One wheel tested and then the other ?

Jon

T2/Mav should be brake tested as per normal 2wd car but yes you're right the LSD will help mask any inadequacy in the rear brakes. Even with fulltime 4x4 they should put an accelerometer on the passenger seat and go out on the road to test the brakes effectiveness.

Tyre Pressures were low !?

LSD oil is hard to find round here got to wait till tomorrow to pick some more up ........

Then I need some rain !

lsd oil

where do you live on the moon    have you not got a local halfords as they sell a cheapish one if its just for flushing the diff out.

Got 6 Motor Factors round here and 3 of them don't know what LSD is ....

Some of them look like they have taken LSD to be honest ! :(

I never think of Halfords really always seems expensive ....

I'll go down tomorrow.

I tried halfords when I wanted some LSD oil & they did'nt have it  A local car parts place managed to get it for me but it had to be ordered in as they did'nt norm stock it. I know mine is due to be done soon as the back end is starting to get a bit happy again in the wet

lsd oil

i know what you mean you could probably get enough spot oil from the acne faced no brainers in the local motor shops round here to fill up your diff.  if its not a saxo or corsa they dont understand

i have 2 solutions which vary with my mood,

live with it...and enjoy it,

or

s l o w down.

reckon we all spend too much time in front wheel
drive euro boxes. and have forgotten the joy n tears
or rear wheel drive...

Halfords ...........

'LSD..... ? Whats LSD ? '

I could have given 2 different answers but......

I just walked away .........

MOT'd today...... Oil in tonight.......

Need Rain tomorrow !
