Ok, well seeing as it seems to have been the month for diff/transfer/g-box oil changing amungst the Forum members, I thought i'd do mine too.

Probably due by the looks of the oils that came out...

Anyway, after grovelling under the truck for an hour re-re-re-re-filling a litre bottle of 80w-90 and squeezing it into the gearbox, I wondered if anyone has used a different oil in their box?

The result is the change is perhaps a touch smoother, but certainly 1st and 2nd are tricky to engage when the box is still cold.

The 80w-90 seems very thick to me for our climate! Anyone used say a modern synthetic oil in their T2??

TIA Tim.

I bought the oils this week, managed to change the rear diff, but the gearbox I have yet to undo the drain plug I just cant budge it. I have 80/90 gl4 for the gearbox and Dexron for the transfer box as per the book although I believe 80/90 can be used if a bit thick...bri

75w/90 is recommended for our climate which would be a little thinner when cold, but both are pretty standard for gearbox oils.

Grade for grade synthetic oils are the same thickness/viscosity as mineral ones, they just stay in grade longer.

The trick with gearbox oil is to warm it up in a bucket f hot water before you use it, that way it is a lot thinner and goes in easier. I use a filer pump, whic is like a giant syringe with 2 pipes attached to one way valves, so you can suck it out of a large container and pump it into the box, still needs warming to thin it down though.

The blow is from the Nissan Workshop manual - no mention of Dexron there, personally I'd take that over the handbook.
