hi guys, im getting ready for new clutch on my terrano2 had couple quotes 2 garages £700 just the labour with out the clutch im guessing near on a grand with a decent clutch supplied then:doh.. im not sure if this is about going rate as it seems bit steep but at the same time both garages tell me there not nice jobs so we have to make it worthwhile as the gearbox weighs a ton!! anyone had one changed recently without dick turpin interviening:lol

hmm...not sure about your year of vehicle, but doing a clutch on ANY 4x4 isnt a fun job, but whats a garage complaining about?? Take it else where, I expect my clutch change to cost around £350 ALL IN (£115 for the clutch from Milners).

pisses me off when garages do that. Act like they have never had to do a clutch on a Terrano before lol....

hi clivvy, mines a 2001 TDI , garages want to pick & choose the jobs these days it seems & if the jobs bit awkward bang loads on ..dont deserve the buisiness well mine will last for a little while yet so i can afford to shop around ...like the sound of £350 labour tho clivvy

Does this mean "james shepared cars hebden bridge" won't do it for free??

That always makes me laugh when people say gearbox weighs a ton if its more than you can lift its irrelavent how much it weighs because its on a trolley jack, have taken out many engines and gearboxes on these things and ive got to say yes they arent nice job but never found the weight of the components to be a factor

There's one or two on here who may do it for less but its not the best of weather to do it in and you would have to travel to them.

its just typical of some garages having a go at treating you like a numpty. I hate the sucking in of air, I usually stop them at that point. If they wanna pick and choose their work, fine, go else where, there are plenty of garages around. I think for the 2001 model, but do check, the clutch is from about £115 to £200. Its approx a 5-6 hour job I believe, and for a garage with the right tools, just a slow one thats all. drop the gear box, swap the clutch, put it all back.

I cant believe a garage would shy away from a bit of hard work..

base on that, and shop around.

It is not just drop the box, the torsion bar cross member is in the way, so you have to remove the torsion bars with all that it entails, although some say there is enough space to slid the box back on the torsion bars, never tried myself, Swifty and I always took the engine out, have to drop the front diff but it is not too bad, only ever took a box out once, pig of a job, but I did not have the benefit of a lift and a gearbox jack, with these aids then a garage should do one in a day, and before you ask, we can no longer do them, Swifty is not about any more, Rick

well i went for my front pipe fitted at james shepared on thurs did a great job i also enquired about some wiper blades too & he bobbed some on he didnt charge me a penny , said it was for my time & diesel after having loads jobs all done for free i just didnt wanna become the biggest cheeky t... & ask for a clutch on top, im very happy with em but im willing to sort the clutch even if i have to travel

But you could just give them a ring and ask how much to do a T2 clutch, you do not need to give your name, Rick

Rick did mine thankfully

Am glad rick and swifty did mine when they did i had the same problem every one i asked wanted silly money to. rick just lifted the engine up on block n tackle.

all hail rick and swifty

My mechanic charged me £160 i supplied the clutch kit. he lifted car and slid gearbox back supported on stands.

I have removed a SWB gearbox with nothing more than an engine hoist and some blocks of wood. Mind you I have an endless supply of swearing, which always seems to help.
Can't remember for the life of me how I did it, but it took all day.:nenau

A bit of lateral thinking.....:doh. You could jack up the gearbox and move the car forward......

Would this be easier.....:nenau

I had mine done last month for 200 squid cash and that included time for me to modify the flywheel for the 3.0 litre upgrade :clap
So would normally be 160 - 200 I guess in spanner monkey's hand :sly
