hi guys, i was on my way home from work on the motorway normally i sit at around 60ish but today i was doing 70 on the flat all 3 lanes busy traffic whissing past , i noticed through my n/s mirror a blue haze which was constant then for about 5 secs i put the pedal down hard ! oops i started to leave the motorway behind in a blanket of blue smoke which i could see from the headlights of the car behind , im wondering now if this is injectors need cleaning or is it normal behavior , normal running around its clean

That's good that is :thumb2 just cleaning the crap out the system :lol
If it's ALL the time then it may need investigating. I assume it picked it's underskirts up and ran like a thief once the loud pedal was squeezed :naughty

unless im very much mistaken , blue smoke is your engine / turbo burning oil

blue smoke-turbo or (i think) burning oil. If ok when running under lighter load, maybe you arent noticing the smoke?? Check that engine....

i had a big oil consumption issue using 5/30 synthetic oil, changed to mineral oil after getting advice on here and it's all sorted :thumb2

oh bugger turbo burning oil, sounds expensive:doh it looked very much like blue haze not thickly spread tho ,i think ill drop the oil replace filter check levels & give it another run .just wondering if there was a problem here would it cause compression loss too

A lot depends on what sort of driving you have been doing for the previous100miles. If short distance stuff, it probably needs a good thrashing, some injector cleaner.

When was the last oil change, and as Plank said what oil is in.:nenau

In headlights, you can't be too sure of the colour as grey smoke looks similar.

If you can't see the car behind you due to the smoke, then you have a real problem....

Also could be the fuel, have you recently changed suppliers?

hi rustic, my normal driving consists of 800 mle mth normally 50%motorway 50% back roads normaly 50 to 60mph , not sure of the oil in the car as i bought the car 3 mth ago the dealer said he had just changed it , ive done nearly 3000 mile since .. starts first time runs well just wondering if that dealer really changed that oil & if not how long has it been in:bow

50-60  There's your problem :lol
Thrash it boyo:lol :doh
OR the dull answer, change the oil

I thought that the exhaust gasses were more visable in the headlights of cars following you. I've driven lots of diesels through the years and noticed that with everyone. I think its just more noticable in the light from other cars. Pertsonally if there's nothing else you've noticed just keep an eye on the oil level and don't worry about it.

If the turbo seals go it's clouds of white smoke until you try and stop engine when it becomes uncontrolable and revs it's self to bits. At this point all you can do is stand on foot brake put hand brake on as tight as poss and drop the clutch with it in 5th gear to stall it. Or at least this is what happened to a mates car when his turbo went.

that sounds scary jim, bet it makes ya arse cheeks nip a bit if the things revving itself to destruction:bow ..im gonna drop the oil & filter first job not a clue whats in or when it was last changed as i bought the car in oct the dealer said he had done the oil but it could have been just another selling con :confused:it feels healthy no rattles picks up well so im gonna sort the oil first , i dont tend to thrash it as i want it to last me a while but yes i do agree with a burst to clear em out now & again esp when the mot,s due works wonders :lol

take inlet pipe from airfilter box to turbo off and put finger on impellor in turbo see if there is any play, if so bearing on way out and its taking the seal with it:( just had this on one of my cars, kept fooling myself it wasnt turbo...it was ended in a massive james bond type smoke screen. if all looks ok there undo bottom hose clip on pipe to intercooler( one nearest turbo) and try to pry it to one side slightly, basically seeing if there is oil going upto intercooler from turbo.
hopefully something simple, but definately check turbo, i was lucky my other car didn't rev itself to bits good luck:thumbs

Oh make sure the engine is not running when you put your finger in the turbo....:doh

I still reckon it's just normal "cruise" to "boot it" transition smoke :sly
Tis fine and dandy:naughty

I think you're right, when I boot the Picasso (1.6Hdi) it leaves a thin trail of grey smoke, and that has much stringent emissions than the Terrano.
This is also in the headlights of the car behind, so check it during the day, if you see any then, investigate.
I have never considered this to be a problem, so I just thought it was normal.
I certainly recommend a good thrash now and again, not fast driving, but leaving it to red line a few times.
I would think it takes the ECU some time to get the fuel mixture right, due to the rapid change.

Change-feedback-adjust-feedback again-adjust again.... Etc

go for a decent mineral oil , not synthetic, and a 10w rather than a 5w, I use 10w/30 :thumb2
