how do i tell started getting strange whirring noises from abs pump.starts with a fast ticking then whirs.
oops title should read ABS.got fingers like sausages hit wrong keys.

I'd love to know where that truck of yours has been.

I've heard very very few reports of ABS pump failure to be honest. I assume brake fluid levels are ok?

I'm at a bit of a loss as to what else you can check though - can't see sensors being the issue but you never know, worth checking the wiring at the wheel.

Is this happening spuriously without input, or is the ABS kicking in and if so, when? Obviously you'd feel the brake pedal vibrating accompanied by a sort of low frequency gravelly noise/sensation.

dunno but he saw me coming. had an issue with abs kicking in for no reason, light would come on.cleaned rear sensors they were easy as in axle.couldnt get fronts out seized in bolts.disconected 3 of four sensors and light stayed off for a fortnight. now back on and now strange noises never had before.cant be much just annoying.

ABS tripping

In my experience with ABS pumping it usually either a faulty wheel speed sensor or if its an older vehicle a build up of crud or corrosion on the front reluctor rings.

This sends a false signal and makes the ABS start to actuate. On my previous 4 WD vehicle the reluctor rings were built into the front drive shafts and as they were £1500 each I took the ABS relay out to shut it up. Sold it with declared fault before next MoT was due.

I'd agree with Mac - like I said above, I've not seen a failed pump mentioned on here before so have a good look and a thorough clean first.

Its a pain because its a definite MoT fail - I think I'm right in saying its the ONLY warning light that can cause a failure...even airbag warning light is not on the test schedule.

I've even seen fails documented on one of the MoT sites where the tester has spotted a pump, somehow worked out that ABS wasn't working and failed it on lack of a warning light (because the previous scrote had actually removed it, taped it up and shoved it down the back of the dash gubbins).

Having said all that, ABS is a life saver sometimes, as I've found out a couple of times, so if you are eventually forced into spending out on new sensors, its better than ending up in a pine box.:augie
