SWR meter , how to ?

My CB started to play up at the weekend so I borrowed an SWR meter to see what's what. The CB receives perfectly by the way.
Anyway I pluged in the aerial etc and got full reading on FWD but then on the REF setting I'm still getting almost full reading :augie
I've got no idea what to do next as there's no instructions
How do I minimise this reading?

Thanks for that, I had no chance having just read the destructions:lol
I had the door open, was parked next to the house and was on channel 9 :doh
