hi
i changed the engine oil last week and all round the sump drain plug was silicon stuff i pulled it off changed the oil, put the plug back on with a new washer (fibre type) assuming that the silicon was there to stop the sump plug leaking.after filling it up i noticed next day the sump was leaking from the plug so i slackened off the plug till a few threads showed wrapped ptfe tape round the threads and tightened cit back up thinking what a good idea it was. however it still was leaking so i tried smothering it with silicon as it was before and this also didnt work. so i bit the bullet bought some new oil and another washer(a copper compression one) drained the oil, cleaned up the sump.i put ptfe tape around the thread, new washer on and refilled it and it is still leaking. so i have been under the car cleaned the sump up and watched where the oil is coming from. it isnt coming fom the joint between the plug and the flat circular plate the washer compresses between but from the flat plate and the sump itself which i thought was all one piece anyway.

sorry for being so long winded but any ideas how to sort it or do i need to replace the entire sump

chemical metal (I did my montego sump with it years ago) drain the oil (don't buy any more, just reuse it) clean the area, plop the chemical metal on there, leave it to dry, etc, etc.

interestin i've had a simmilar issue, but i thought the plate was just on the outside of the sump i didn't think it could leak through that? could it just be oil that ran down from the filter (it's hard to get it off without some spillage) trapped underneath?

I've just put a new copper washer under mine and a smear o silicone and so far so good, but i did have an issue with the clips on the pipes out of the intercooler. They blow some quite oily air out if they are loose.

i thought that the plate was part of the sump but its definately weeping from between the plate and the sump. was begining to wonder if the plate isnt actualy an old sump washer that someone has left in place in the past and is just stuck on with crap

it's got to be worth investigating, if it is scrape it off if not clean it up with some brake cleaner spray and chemical l metal seal around it. Either recycle the oil or if not you know it will be bloody clean after two changes :thumb2
