I have a problem today where all my stop lights are only coming on now and again.. Guess it is the switch so looked at the top of the pedal and there are 2 !!!!! They both seem to be going in and out ok when the pedal is pushed? I will take them off and give them a quick spray of wd40 in case they are sticking but.... why 2??? Am now looking at the workshop manual but not found them yet :confused:

Anyone have any ideas or should I just change both?

absolutely no idea , could be related to

automatic gear box ?

or braking switch maybe something to do with fuelling

id be asking timbo, or rick (solarman) before i fiddle , just in case .
iirc there is something to do with running that is brake related

what system is yours hitachi or bosch what year ???

as for the brake lights , have you checked for a power supply to bulb holder and tried a good earth source (piece of wire to side of bulb to some clean part of good metal or find a bolt close to put it to )

I cannot help on the Mk 4 my Mk1 & Mk2 only have one switch, Rick

Press one switch in by hand to see which one is the brake light switch.

what year is it?

It's a 2002 so is the mk4? I have now found a mention on the switches on page 258/259 of the manual which say one is a 'stop lamp switch' and tother is a 'brake switch' :doh:doh They both look identical so still none the wiser... I am still leaning towards ABS:nenau.....will try each one in turn (bloody lights are working now) by pushing the pedal (lights on...) and then moving the plungers back up with a screwdriver... cant do it ATM as car in car park aat work and no bloody room to open the door wide enough:doh....I will call Nissan and get a price to change both just to be on the safe side

sounds like more an electrical fault than a switch fault . switches tend to work or not

well it can only be the 12v missing as it comes out the fuse box (via Fuse 4) straight to the switch (about 10 inches) and off to the rear of the car.... will have a poke about at the weekend with a voltmeter and see if its switch or feed.... new switch is £30 inc vat from dealer :( so best make sure what it is first !!

So I have done as suggested and tried both switches, found the brake one.... so unscrewed it and found (with a multi meter across it) if you let the plunger out very slowly it doesnt make a good contact. For now I have adjusted the switch a bit in the hope the contact is making on a different part of the contact? Have checked on line and found the part number and bingo!! Brand new for £8 on e bay :thumbs:thumbs Nissan wanted £30 :eek::eek:
