Mot failure due to excessive (allegedly) oil leak. I say allegedly as I have never seen a drip in the two years I have owned this vehicle.
Is it possible to renew oil seals or would a s/h box be easier?

If you're 100% it's not leaking, just clean it up and take it away, whose to say you haven't replaced it for a 2nd hand one?

Definitely wash it down and assess the leak yourself. If marginal and you think it will stay clean by the time you return to the test station for a re-test, then put a dab of scrap yard esque marking paint on it and give every securing nut and bolt a good clean then coat in copper grease as if they've been removed and re-fitted. You need to assess it and identify every fixing that would need to be removed and make it look so, but only if the tester really has gone overboard with the decision, otherwise replace it!

I've never had an oil leak given as a failure. Always advisory. That tester sounds too fussy

under section 2.3 ..... a leak in the power steering system is a reason for a fail

downloaded and will have a flick through that myself when I get chance..

wonder how the Landies get on then cos they all piss oil out, Rick

Is that your normal MOT tester, if you are sure there is no leak he may be fibbing:eek:

Thats very true a mates car went in for MOT & failed on all of the metal brake pipes being very rusty, I had a look to see how bad they were & every one was copper & about 2 years old:eek::eek:

I had a similar issue with my car.No loss of fluid from reservoir just a bit of oil swarf around the steering box. I took car away put some PAS stop leak in the reservoir. Washed Washed off steering box with Jizer & jet wash. Took car back for re-test following day. Never went went back to that testing station. In fairness to them the steering box had a major leak 2 years later & had new steering box fitted. I am a fan of the Lucas stop leak just done my Santa Fe to stop a very minor leak.

Thanks for all replies.
No it's not my usual full-price local tester. It's Mr Clutch. I went to them as I was satisfied with a new clutch for £400. Here's the rest. Horn not working-it has auxiliary button as wiring loom in steering wheel has failed(£70 for a new one I believe), battery insecure-agreed, seat mechanism doesn't work as intended-it does; tester obviously doesn't know about the locking lever (neither did I), only one fog light working-its only got one fog light, o/s/f brake binding. Difficult to detect manually so I've been to my tyre supplier to put on rolling road. 22% out of balance which within the 25% limit.
The steeringbox is leaking but not enough to drip. Does this constitute the description "severe leak" as required for failure? I'm going to t clean it up, remove the arm and try some PTFE tape round the spindle as well as the stop leak suggested by Macbethiel. Again many thanks, Wakers

if it is not enough to drip then would not bother and ptfe tape will not help, stop leak probably will if it is slight like yours, and go to another tester, Rick

As your horn works it's a pass maybe put a sticker next to it with horn wrote on it so the tester knows what it's for:thumbs Yes the battery is a big fail & you could get 3 points & a fine for that if you got a spot check off the Police:augie fog light is a pass the tester must be blind. The brakes TBH i'd take the pads out & clean up the calipers & put a bit of copper grease on the pads so they move a bit better. The steering box i'd try the leak stop stuff as you've got nothing to loose but when going for a retest take a rag with you & give the pump a good wipe clean around the corner from the garage:thumbs
I've always found places that do cheaper MOT's your more likely to get a list of jobs that need doing as that's how they make their money & offset the cheap MOT price:rolleyes:
