Was sitting having my lunch, and noticed that there was some play on the steering wheel when engine not running, how much play is ok!! think it moves about an inch, and how could i fix this problem myself?? 8O

Is it when you rotate the steering wheel from side to side :? If it is mines the same & if I remember right it's the free play in the steering box

it's just that years ago i had a ford feesti and it had the same probs with it and i had to get a new steering rack for it!!,i'm sure i read a post some where saying how much free play you could have!! can't find it now..lol
doesn't seem to affect the handling though!
And its not long past it's mot

You are allowed so much free play but I can't remember how much  it's the same with alot of vans & truck due to the stearing set ups. If it passed it's mot I would think the amount of free play you have is ok.
Don't mention MOT's as i've got to put mine in for one in the next week or two & I know it's just going to fail on something  It will be the first fail in 5 years

About an inch, yep sounds normal to me... mine's always done it.
Tightens up when the power steering pump is running though.
Still runs straight as a die down the road.
A characteristic of this type of steering I guess.

The Fiesta is rack and pinion, a different design to the Mav, My daughters Fiesta with power steering it is like having a wheel lock on, it is so tight.

Yip,spot on rustic!! when the engine is on it seems fine and there is no probs on the road, the feestys steering was tight..
i can relax now

sterring free play

hi.
there is adjustment on the steering box,if you look on top of s/box youwill see an adjuster nut with a locking nut. this takes out the free play
BUT IF YOU OVER TIGHTEN IT .STEERING WONT SELF CENTER .
THERE IS A THREAD REGARDING CORRECT SETTING.
