I was thinking of nicking the wifes leather-bound steering wheel but don't want it to explode while I'm taking it off! Anyone had any experience?

Was going to replace ours, but having looked at the pdf for it and at the wheel had second thoughts, the bag is held onto the wheel by two anti tamper bolts.

Paul where did you see the anti-tamper bolts? I see the wheel needs a puller of some kind but that might be possible to bodge.....

One the side of the wheel there are two plastic covers they are behind there, this is what the pdf says,

CAUTION:
I The rotation of the spiral cable (SRS “Air bag” component
part) is limited. If the steering gear must be removed, set
the front wheels in the straight-ahead direction. Do not
rotate the steering column while the steering gear is
removed.
I Remove the steering wheel before removing the steering
lower joint to avoid damaging the SRS spiral cable.
STEERING WHEEL
I Remove remote audio control (if applied).
I Remove air bag module and spiral cable.
Refer to RS-26, “Removal—Air Bag Module and Spiral Cable”.

I
Align spiral cable correctly when installing steering wheel.

a) Set the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
b) Make sure that the spiral cable is in the neutral position.
The neutral position is detected by turning left 2.5 revolutions
from the right end position. Align the two marks ( ).
CAUTION:
The spiral cable may snap due to steering operation if the
cable is installed in an improper position.
Also, with the steering linkage disconnected, the cable may
snap by turning the steering wheel beyond the limited number
of turns. (The spiral cable can be turned up to 2.5 turns from
the neutral position to both the right and left.)

Do you mean under the steering column shroud Paul or somewhere else? What do they look like oin terms of the kind of driver to undo them?

the pdf extract you showed is straightforward and just talks about making sure you put the live cable for the airbag back in place properly so it doesn't get stressed.....think I might go outside and pop the horn cover as we speak!!!

If you look on the wheel under where it goe's out to the outter ring they are there

Well i fiddled and i fiddled...then I went and had a look at the truck :lol:lol:lol:lol

All I have on my s/wheel is a small flap that covers a connector; whether thats airbag, horn or both wasn't clear...but I couldn't even get the horn cover off and kept setting the bloody thing off - gave up in the end as neighbour was giving me the evils :naughty might have another go around 11pm tonight!

UPDATE - if anyone says "disconnect the battery you wally" I'll swing for 'em...yes I overlooked that little one at the time...

So its adjourned UFN. :(

I didnt say any thing. you did

Just a word of caution
To prevent a premature deployment of the air bag and possible injury, the battery should be disconnected for 10 minuets prior to attempting to remove the airbag, to disarm the system.

:lol:lol:lolThis will also stop the horn sounding:lol:lol:lol

You must always disconect the battery for at least 1/2 hour if you are working on a steering wheel fitted with an air bag or the seat belt pre tensioners or you run a high risk of saying good bye to your face or life as they are both packed with explosives:doh:doh:doh

Mmmm - not convinced on that one I'm afraid...if there are any capacitors in circuit then no way are they meaty enough to hold a charge for that length of time...you would stand more chance of it getting zapped by static. And the manual doesn't even tell you to disconnect the battery!

As for the amount of explosive, well I'm not saying you wouldn't get powder burns or a bit of bruising, just as when your airbag goes off, but the amount concerned is tiny, it has to be to conform with all the regulations.

Its a bit like the old "turn your mobile off on the petrol forecourt please" - there isn't a single recorded instance anywhere of an accident/fire being caused by a mobile in such circumstances (unless someone is going to find one now, which is highly probably knowing you lot!) so its an urban myth. I used to work on Harrier ejector seats and weapons systems years ago - THATS the kind of space you could lose your head with a wrong move!

15-love :)

Well I can tell you it can/does happen as I ended up with 2 broken knuckles thanks to a seatbelt pre tensioner safety pin failling & it going off:augie:augie I have also seen air bags go off on their own:doh plus by law these items have to be stored in a metal container
