Has anyone got a starter motor for a 2004 patrol auto?
Cheers

It's just for an emergency spare for when I go on holiday

How far you going on holiday bud?

I'm probably jinxing myself saying this but in over 3 and a half years of owning my Trol I've never had starter issues and she's seen plenty mud and water :nenau

Hmf I am a bit peed off, mine failed a few weeks ago so fitted the last one I had of the last scrapper, about a week later we had very heavy rain and a couple off railway bridges here have had the road lowered for better headroom and of course they flood rather than take a detour went through 2ft 6in of standing water (marker board on the railings gives depth up to 6ft) no problem other than I lost my front number plate, about 2 weeks later starter starts playing about, so took it of and stripped it (half full of rusty water) so yet again made a good one from all the bits I have but as all the bits have had past usage on my off road motor it was not completely successful, so bit the bullet and ordered a recon one £152.00 fitted it yesterday morning great till this evening, jumped in tuned the key and click, no amount of turning on and off sorted it, so popped the bonnet drivers window down 2ft spirit level with plastic ends used to hit the solenoid whilst turning the key 3 hits and away it went, the odd thing with these starters is that the solenoid is a two stage device, have not bothered to suss it out completely but the initial coil run by the ignition switch is not powerful enough to draw the plunger in even when the solenoid is not on the starter, let alone pulling the gear forward as well, what it does is draws current through the starter brushes (think it is negative) what is certain is if the brushes are not contacting well then solenoid does not full through, shocking the motor in the start position encourages a connection, I half expect this on my off roader but not on a service exchange starter, but to be double sure will run a wire from starter to battery direct and see if it is the same, Rick

I'm going to Portugal on a off road holiday, as mine is an auto I thought if the starter motor does pack up I have no way of starting it so take a spare just in case

For best reliability, fit the new one now, keep the old ones a serviceable spare.
Also chance to test it, whilst still under warranty.
Also, changing if before you go, you will know what tools you need, and what the snags are.
