starter

Hi

Is the starter turning the engine over as fast as the previous starter, is the glow plug light illuminated as normal?

sorry to ask but all are wires and connectors ok? :nenau

good luck with the truck

paulp

ps someone with far greater knowledge will be on soon

i'd check the connection, could be that when you start it from towing, and then try restart, its doing so because the burst of power is heating up the connection so it sticks, then, when its cooled down, its losing contact....perhaps? Or maybe the ignition wire is loose? Mine was, didnt fit right you see, had to stick it on...

Sounds like faulty glow plugs to me.

Sounds like faulty glow plugs to me, Have you tried turning key to warm glow plugs then turn off again without starting, do this a couple of times to really warm the plugs then try to start it. if this works then I would def say the glow plugs are naff. :nenau

Open bonnet, turn ignition on and listen. If you hear a cracklin noise it's the same as what mines doing at the mo. My next step on mine is to run a wire straight from positive terminal of battery and then to the glow plug buzz bar. If this works then the wiring and the relay need checking. I've got a thread going at the moment about mine.

PS dont leave glow plugs connected to battery for too long!!!!

1st of all thanks for the replies have tried all the above b4 i thought i'd throw it open to the masses .thanks again every1 and KEEP THE ADVICE COMING PLEASE GETTING FED UP OF WALKING NOW LOL

I'd be interested to hear how you get on, I can't do mine until Wed morning and then having a small op so i'll be out of action till at least next weekend if not longer. I consider my self lucky because we have two motors so I'll be ok for work but wife will av too walk:lol:lol:lol

starter

If all of the suggested is ok then maybe it is just a coincidence that the starter was changed and then the problems you described.

If the starter motor and glow plugs (I am sure one that is more technically minded will tell you how to test a glow plug with a multi meter or something)
are ok I would consider a fuel blockage or at least a partial fuel blockage. maybe sediment in a filter or the tank has been disturbed and creates a blockage when it settles again?

Initially as turning the engine you could try easy start. if starts could suggest lack of fuel or the fuel syphoning back into the tank if the battery is going flat before it starts - fit non return valve or again if fitted check the tanks breather pipe is not blocked. make sure no pipes have been crushed when and if the truck was jacked up or put on axle stands.

I would then clean and or replace all the fuel filters and visually inspect the air filter.

again whilst trying to start spray the hoses and lines in the engine bay with WD40, to see if there are any air leaks in the system. if the truck starts it could indicate that you have an air leak in that particular area.

If these trucks have them check the wire to the stop solenoid to ensure a sound connection.

sorry mate i am really guessing here but these are what I would try.

failing that wait until left overnight and call the AA/ RAC out and get an opinion.

good luck hope i have not sent you on a wild goose chase

Have you left a power feed wire off at the starter? Or accidentally attached it to earth rather than +12v ??

Agreed 100% , had the same symptoms on a VW Passatt yonks ago.

Remove the glow plugs, beg steal or borrow a multimeter and check theyre all reading around the same resistance I'll bet at least one will be open circuit (chances of them all failing to an identical unserviceable degree is minimal), if they are ok check the voltage appearing at each connection :thumb2
