Poor battery voltage, meaning that there is not enough energy getting to the motor, thus it turns slowly, and runs for longer that can burn out the motor.

Possibly low voltage caused by poor battery, poor connections on the battery, poor earth engine to chassis, and battery to chassis.

Other than that, I always press the clutch down when starting, saves trying to run the gearbox too. Also accidentally left in gear saves driving off when it fires.:doh

It could be a poor quality starter motor, or solenoid.
What were the origins of the starter motor and solenoid?
How new were they? new second hand, new reconditioned, or new as in factory original?

Was there any warranty with it?

best regards,
Rustic

Refurbed bosch starter fitted and died after two days back in august. Definitely not wet or muddy. Thinking it wasn't a starter problem as I'd just changed it I've changed battery clamps ,battery ,ignition , cleaned every earth and checked every connection. Will get a new starter tomorrow and also think I'll changed the alternator just incase that killed it. Can't check it untill it starts but don't want to risk it being the problem. Old battery got very hot last time it was running.

Always always go cheapest option first and check cables and connections

I've recently done mine and I felt like I'd been in a cage fight after it, I was aching all over lol

Can't actually remember the brand of my new one, I'll have to check my reciept

Refurb... Say no more.. Sorry bit of a moaner here, but refurb is a bad idea, saw this at honda often, oh i just refurbed my starter, or refurbed my alternator, 2 weeks or a month later they would be back in again... Saw this numerous times as a service advisor, see their embarrassed faces too :lol

check output of alt too

tenner says it is the bearing/bush on the gear side of the motor shaft.

replaced mine with a Hitachi haven't had an issue since,.

I have just got a replacement t2 it came from a trader as that was all I could afford.
it had had a new starter already fitted to it and was sold as a ring gear fault.
symptoms are sometimes it would catch and turn moto over then it would just spin or just click.
this happened when I test drove it and I said it was not the ring gear.
I paid 700 for it a 98 mot to Jan 15 and took a chance on it.
I put my almost new battery from my broken t2 and same thing happens.
after an hour of redoing all connections etc my brother was playing with the key in the ignition switch.
he noticed that if the key was just turned like you would it would not kick in the stater,it was turned to the glow then slowly turned autostart it would work and start the motor.
so befor you remove the starter investergate the switch, you might be lucky.

There were a few threads about ignitio switch failures a while ago,try a search on here

Also a very good point, I have suffered from this as well, I have a very worn ignition barrel, I had to remove the switch and give it a bit of a spray with some WD40. My ignition is that bad that sometimes the weight of my keys pulls the key out of the ignition when I go over a speed bump or round an island :doh

Now I've converted my key to a flip key with the transponder in it I presume as long as I had a replacement barrel, key I'd be able to switch barrel?

The only thing I'm struggling with is how the barrel would be removed as the clamp is attached weirdly :nenau, how do you remove them, the dont appear to be conventional nuts and bolts, more metal cylinders with no ends on :nenau

They are security bolts, the head shears when tightened. :thumb2

A small hammer and centre punch usually shifts them, tap away until they loosen.

hacksaw as they are fitted with anti tamper shear bolts.
