Hi guys my starter motor is on it's way out so I was going to recondition it (the wife won't let me just buy a reconditioned one) so does anyone know what size brushes I need and best place to get them? Also what else do I need to recondition one??
Cheers
Brushes depend on which model, which make.
Reconditioning may require a new gear/pinion, new bendix spring, new bearings, the armature commutator may need skimming, or the armature will need re winding and balancing, the field winding might need replacing.
Also the solenoid may require reconditioning, new or cleaned contacts etc.
Simple decision is based on how soon you need the vehicle, can you get parts if the car is off the road.
Strip the motor, clean it all up, check parts for wear, check resistance of each winding on the armature, check bearings for wear.
Now make a list of bits you need, source them from a reputable supplier, wait for them to arrive, rebuild it, and hope it works better that it did.
If not, repeat the above process. Several times...:doh
OR get a reconditioned unit that has had faulty parts replaced, new brushes, new bearings, fully tested with a guarantee, and job completed in under 2 hours.
During my earlier career, I did the electronic control system and current and voltage measuring system for both a starter motor tester, and an alternator tester.
From my experience, a fully reconditioned unit from a reputable supplier will be as good as a new one, or may even prove to be more reliable, as some of the non moving parts have been "tested".
Personally, I would do a complete strip down, as there are companies local to me that specialise in repairs and parts, and you could get the parts same day.
So depends on what skills you have and parts you have access to.
