I'm after some advice from the Informative Collective on here please....

Found a couple of Motorsport engineers who can build a custom stainless exhaust for the Patrol. Their exhaust/ intercooler fabrication work is exceptional.
I'm thinking....

Remove the cat.
Run in 3" from turbo back.
Weld on boss for EGT sensor at turbo outlet bend.
Depending on noise output, work in a muffler to the system if required.

Their are chaps on here with more experience in this. Your thoughts please.
D

Makeitfit is your man on this, but think he is fixing boats away at the mo, Rick

Check the legalities first Dave, if it NEEDS a cat then just put a fake one on for appearances!
When you say turbo back are you gonna have a custom dump pipe too?, the one on my Terry looks vefy restrictive so its something I plan on replacing when I do a zorst.

I haven't quite left yet
What's the question :nenau
As for ss zorst what's the cost of the work ?
EGT is better placed before the turbo by the way.
Also you can fit an "in end" muffler retrospectively if you want. That way you can get the benefit of a straight through system and just bolt in the muffler for day to day stuff.
OR fit a diverter valve. 3" electric valve that saves you bolting in a muffler but allowing fun time straight through noise at the flick of a switch :D
Also note you can make up a full ss system by buying bends off ebay and some straight pipe and do the job at a fraction of the price.
What was the question again :lol

Thanks Doug, yep a new dump pipe as the existing one is part of the cat.
I'm prepared to fit a 'sports' free flow version if I think there may be hassle. I'll speak to my MOT guy.
So far, I've been told I should be OK to remove it.

Thanks Pete,
These guys use bends in preference to mandrel bends as their diameter remains full bore.
Cost should be about £400.
The tone of the finished job is important. A sportier sound would be nice. it's the affect on the engine and lower EGTs when I'm in the mountains thats crucial. The long trips down to these places will mean I don't want a too noisy exhaust.

What's the difference between a muffler and a resonator?:nenau

Is muffler just an Americanism? I have a feeling that a muffler may be packed with some fire proof materials whereas a resonator resonates, do a search for Vortex exhausts.

A muffler or silencer will quieten down the sound of the exhaust, usually using sound dampening wool or something, a resonator is designed to completely take out a certain frequency of sound. it wont make the exhaust quieter as such.

A straight through exhaust can drone at a certain revs and a good resonator will take that drone out. Its all to do with waves, peaks and troughs.

Some high end car makers now use a combination of silencers and resonators to tune the sound of there standard exhaust systems. It's a bit of a science really.

I've just put in a resonator into my straight through system to make it a bit more usable on a long journey but will still be LOUD, just hopefully without a drone.

I'll research this further Martin, thanks!
I definitely won't want a drone all the way to the Pyranees in June!!
