OK when I first got the project back on the road I noticed an annoying squealing on pretty much full lock. Can feel a sort of bumping through the steering. This disappears once the cars warmed up.

Thinking it's power steering belt, what do you guys think and are they difficult to fit?

Cheers

yep PS belt probably on its last legs, and easy to replace, to get the new one on you will need to wind the adjuster right back, much more than to get the old one off, Rick

Whoaaaa Whoaaaaaa Whoaaaaaaa

Mine did this and I thought my pump was on its way out :doh I checked the fluid and it appeared fine with the engine off at first, started the engine and it all dissapeared  Topped it up and it's been OK since.

Reminds me though, I want to bin off my power steering fluid cooler pipe off as that seems to be developing another pinhole leak by the looks of things :doh

I'll do it the weekend whilst me and Elty are fixing my crossmember :thumb2

Is that the awful looking pipe that snakes around under the rads and disappear back where it came from. Or do I have problems? [emoji33]

I'm alright thanks Rick :lol I'm going to chop it and join with rubber pipe, it's pointless, no need for it in this climate

But you can get me a door switch, see your breaking thread :thumb2

OK wheres the reservoir and what do I use to top it up?

Ta

Banshee if the level was low would it still squeal when engine warm? Mine only squeals when cold.

Is there any specific type of power steering fluid?

Where's the reservoir and is it easy to tell levels?

Cheers

The reservoir is next to the coolant header tank which is next to the battery P/S fluid is Dexron II IIRC

Cheers Sweety:thumb2

Will try and dodge the showers and check level tonight.

Haha poor wife scared herself with it tonight when she set off from work. She turned out of car park on to main road and it squealed, she thought she had pulled out in front of someone as it sounded like tyres so waited for the crunch :doh

It's the Black resevoir with the thin orange strip around it, just to the right of the coolant resevoir.
Mine is the Td, so your layout might be different.
When you remove the cap, it has it's own dipstick built in.
If yours has broken off, I'll measure mine...:naughty

The TDI's have a white one with a little black top Rustic or at least my 1999 MK2 & this 2005 MK4 have there are markings on the side max & min

It'll be belt need tightening it'll squeel in morning as fluid is at its thickest and once engine been running for a bit the oil warms up and becomes thinner. If ya low on fluid the steering will go very heavy. Just tweek the belt a little if no signs of ware on belt otherwise replace it

If you do replace it do both\all ( if you have air con) too as one belt does water pump and you don't want breaking

Just been out and checked the fluid level, it's about 1/8 inch above minimum mark when cold. Checked the belt and feels and looks pretty good condition. Has some movement but not really too bad, more movement in the alternator belt.

How do I tell how much movement the belts should have?

on the longest run about 15 mm deflection on one finger pushing is about right, Rick
