When cold, my alternator pulley squeaks like a godun' until thee engine gets warm, I have been remedying this for a while now by using GT85 and a straw and spraying this into the recess behind the belt which does rectify the issue for a few days then its back with a vengeance

I'm going to change the belt soon however I have already adjusted the tension and it hasn't made a difference.

Is the alternator serviceable in that area?

I might take this opportunity to swap mine for a 90a one from a QD32 engine :thumb2

When i baught my terrano it was the same sounded rough as eck. I thaught sure one of the pulleys was goosed but my oldman sprayed the belts with wd40 noise went away. Baught two new belts put them on noise was gone. Maybe change your belts first?

Mine chirps away when it's damp or very cold but if the weather is warm it's quiet sure it's the belts poss the AC belt

How funny, mine was also squeaking like a goodun today :doh

Squeeky belts

On many Mercs the drive belts squeak if its damp even though they have automatic tensioners.

It's often a sign of them needing to be replaced as they have lost thier grip much like a worn car tyre as the belts have a grooved tread on them .

Update on this I was speaking with fermer_giles or Graham last night who came into Edinburgh to see me and pick a door card up that I'd brought up from James for him.

He told me that his belt was doing this when he brought it but soaking it in WD40 cured it temporarily, he changed the belt and it was fine after that :thumbs

I tried spraying mine earlier and didn't cure it, I then sprayed some more into the recess behind the pulley and voila, no more squeeking, so I def think this is bearings or actual pulley etc :doh

Silicone spray seems to bulk out rubber, I was going to suggest a gentle spray with this? Although my squeaking seems to have stopped, lubrication is important, nobody seems to bother.

And no, not lubrication of belts :p
