hi folks,
just picked up a 1996 terrano. idles well and picks up fine until about 1900. then splutters and coughs it little tittys off up to 2500 then picks up fine again!

can anyone shed any light? ive tried my spare hitachi maf on it, possibly a bit better but not much different. i dont think its a fuel problem because it revs perfectly top end of revs. thanks james

air, internal pump problem, loose connections some place, bit of an odd one me thinks, Rick

think I would try injectors first, if you have some spare, also bad connections, do not forget that at a certain rev band you get a particular vibration frequency, this could just trigger a poor connection on say any wires that go to the ecu, temperature sensors maff etc, also check the vacuum valves and egr for any problems, try disconnecting all vac valves and see if there is any improvement/difference, Rick

TDi or TD / could well be the MAF as over 2500 the maf aint doing diddly ;)

he has tried the maf, and 96 think it will be a TD, Rick

oops missed that bit, but that does make it a TDi :p
Any codes coming up ? Could well be a sensor as most of them not needed over 2500 as all is happening then is air fuel bang :sly

yep folks tdi. im just wondering if my spare maf has gathered dust on the shelf. before i changed it i was 95% sure it was a maf problem and my spare was defo good when last used about 12ish months ago. what is best to clean them with?
i will read the codes - it may be a good idea!

I use acetone on a cotton bud, but pure alcohol is as good, but if it is fly by wire TDi No 1 injector first then pump, read the code may be good, Rick

sorted!!!!
cleaned both mafs with acetone and now runs nice with either of them. strange how my spare maf was fine when i last used it though.
it still has a small spit about 2000rpm but not bad at all, i might run some deisel purge through it now just to give injectors etc a good clean.
thanks for the good advice.

just shows what a little cleaning can do, Rick
