mostly electrics but all one after the other but the problem ive just mentiooned above would be very great full if i could be pointed in the right direction to finding the speed sensor or whatever sensor it is called that works the rev counter many thanks

many thanks i already have the manual on cd before i joined here been through it but cannot find any answers manual seems not to go onto detail much

Pablo check for threads on getting fault codes, its pretty straightforward - that will at least point you in the right direction....

cheers i will do once ive got the codes will that give me more idea where to look ?

Should do....report back here with your homework and someone will sort you out LOL. Its just a matter of shorting two pins on the diagnostic connector and counting the flashing lights!

Its just I can't see the EML coming on just cos your rev counter is acting up, but then I was wrong once before.....

hello lacroupade many thanks for that ive managed to follow the guide to get the mil light flashing its one big flash one short flash so it looks like 11 to me ive done it a couple of times to make sure but eleven says fuel injection pump position sensor incorrect position .
what do you make of it ? wouild this make the rev counter behave like that? sometimes like i said the rev counter works and the light goes out then when its not working bang the lights on but im not in limp mode when the lights on just seems normal driving some would say well why bother fixing it but i like my terrano and would rather stay on top of it any pointers many thanks in advance

Fuel injection pump sensor, well the pulse that is proportional to revs has to come from the engine somewhere.
From 1 injector you would get 1 pulse per 2 revs, but if you combine all 4 injectors you will get 2 pulses per rev, so I guess this is where the ecu gets its data.

I am looking at the Wifes diesel car, and I am thinking about a rev counter and this is where I was going to take the pulse from anyway.

So I guess you have found it, could be a poor connection, or damp since it is intermittent.

Best regards, Rustic

hello rustic call me dim if you like but im looking for some sort of connection am i coming from the injectors into the wiring harness is that where the rev counter or ecu would take its feed i was under the impression it came from engine itself like i said call me dim please,

Don't know where it comes from on your engine, as mine is the TD version.
I know there is a crank position sensor some where, members have looked at this , but hopefully they may be able to help you.

If there is a fault code for this and it's not 11 then it won't be that.

It should be in the manual somewhere !

where is the link for the manual again i cant seem to find it in the dropdown links

On the mechanical 2.7 the rev counter is driven directly from the W terminal on the alternator.

On ALL the drive-by-wire 2.7's and 3.0 it is driven from the ECU. The ecu receives a signal from the speed sensor mounted on the bell housing which reads teeth on the flywheel (Bosch ecu) -actual engine speed- , and on Zexels from a sensor on the front timing case -half engine speed.

If the signal from the sensor fails in any way, the engine will stop or fail to start.

The Injector lift sensor is ONLY for timing correction and so the ECU can run in closed loop timing control.

afternoon timbo ,when you say the engine will stop or fail to start myine still runs when the rev counter goes down but the mi light comes on and keeps driving , but twice a few weeks ago engine did just stop for no reason and pulled over and started again fine as if i had stalled it but the strange thing was that when you usually stall a car all the dash lights come on till u switch key off then start again this did not happen .
pulled the code from it earlier this morning and it flashes code 11 which in the list is saying fuel injection pump pos sensor in really baffles ,
there are two connections on the underneath right side bell housing but they seem ok

Sensor on bellhousing is at the top 12 oclock position and the plug for it is secured to the dipstick tube.

many thanks for that i will get back here when i have got to the bottom of it

greetings still have not got to the bottom or top of things on this subject there seems to be nothing attached to the dipstick tube traced a wire down near the dipstick tube and runs along by where the clutch fork thingy is then up out of reach above the gear box somewhere cannot get access any suggestions
