I notice a lot of the wiring on my T2 is the same for both the Left and right hand drive versions, plus a lot of the accessory wires like the extension brake light wires are also already installed, so there are quite a few "Spare" wires floating around inside there.

On the Drivers door, you have the electric window switch, which is also illuminated, but nothing on the passenger side.. anyone know if the wires are in the passenger door for it? Also, are there any spare wires in the rear doors?

Also I was thinking, it would be good to maybe start a thread where we could list the extra wires that are included in the car, as we find them, for any one that wants to fit any accessories the easy way.. Things like

Extension brake light at top of rear door, behind plastic trim (All wired up and ready to go)
Glove box light and switch cable already there.
Dash light dimmer wiring, plug linked out, and located left of steering wheel by alarm switch.

Any others?

Sounds great - I'm looking to add heated seats to mine, so I'd love to know the wiring that drives the factory fitted ones to see if it's already there.

Also, I'm sure some models had extra ciggy lighter sockets, always handy.

I had my Drivers seat out the other day, to change the CD changer, and did not find any extra wires, but they may be hidden under the carpet, so Ryan should be able to answer that one. I looked to see if there was a wire for a power socket in the back of the centre console, but could not find one there.

I did discover an extra 12 volt wire down around the rear near side light cluster just inside the boot, when I was fitting the towing socket, but by then I had already run my own, and as it was just after I got the car I did not think to take a note of it, so will have to add that at a later date when I next have a poke around down there... I assumed it was either for a power socket, or for the towing socket.

well as you know, i pulled the dash out my Terrano and yes, there is all the sockets their for everything:D they use the high spec wiring loom on every vehicle, just don't put in the electrical components, i upgraded my mid range SLX with the equipment from a SE+ and my SLX had all the plugs and things, e.g. for fitting head light washers, i just got the switch, pump and relay and plugged it all in hay presto, i made washer jets from the windscreen washers on a rover 100 and some washer hose i had floating around, it worked, same with the fog lights in the bumper, and electric adjustable mirrors. They also have all the wiring and mounts to fit air con too:thumb2

Manufacturers on medium car manufacturing runs use one loom, as they can have 10,000 of the same made cheaper than 6000 high spec ones and 4000 low spec ones.

However take the Ford Focus, they will go straight for thousands of the basic spec and a separate order for the LX version and again a separate order for the GLX as the cost saving in wires and sockets is very significant when the volume is much greater that the expected sales of say the Terrano/ Maverick.

Having said that, the will be a Maverick loom, and a Terrano Loom, and separate ones for the swb/lwb versions. There will be separate looms again for the Mk I Mav vs the MkII etc etc.

Now you soon have more than a dozen.
Then Left hand drive would be different again.

So you can see why they chose to fully populate the loom for each vehicle.

Then there is the dealer fit options, all requiring additional wires etc.

best regards,

Rustic

yes, cheaper when bulk buying, the wiring looms for the dash are just the same on LWB and SWB, obviously the floor loom is different, and they are different on square headlight, square headlight from 95 on with airbag and imoe, tdi ecs. i would suspect the maverick has the same loom as the terrano?

The Mav uses the Ford radio, and the amp under the Driver's seat, and there have been a few issues when trying to retro fit an alternative radio system.
