I lost the spare key for my 2004 Terrano, so im using a spare that was cut by a previous owner.

I went into Timpsons today to get another cut, and they quoted £40 as there is a chip inside!

Anyone recomend anywhere else i can get it cheeper or is £40 a good price?

Cheapest I've heard of, Nissan is £80 to copy the transponder

you are unlikely to get it cheaper, the kit to program a key is expensive, they have to get a return on the investment, Rick

think paid £50 or so for one from a security specialist.

it doesnt have the remote for central locking but will start car.

our main key has the remote as part of key, toyed with getting a remote
fob for the spare as our older mk2 had but never got round to as concerned
might not be on same frequency.

Spare Keys

You are right spare keys are expensive these days due to the transponder systems, remote controls and getting them coded to the ECU.
Mercs use a dual remote system one is infa-red and the other is a radio channel for long distance operation.

On Mercs the keys are a tad over £200 each depending on the age - a little cheaper on older cars due to Merc part pricing policy. Worst bit is the ECU can only be coded to accept a fixed number of keys I think its 8 in a vehicle lifetime. After that you need to buy a new ECU - they start at well over £1,000 !!
