Every once in a while on my 2.7TD on start up there is a thump which can be felt in the vehicle. It seems to come from the transfer box area, but I could be wrong as it is a one off noise. It has the characteristics of something having been under tension, or torque, being released. If it an early indication of component failure can anyone please tell me which component it is, either transfer box, diff etc and I can start about aquiring another one before this one fails completely. Thanks for your help.

Hi Ted, is it an Auto?

If it is a manual, when starting press the clutch in, if you get the thump then it shouldn't be gearbox.

Had something similiar, turned out to be middle exhaust bracket that bolts to the side leg of the chassis, check it, as the rubber thats bonded to the bracket brakes loose and when you started up car, you got a thump, but only at start up time.

I'm with Monty, get someone to have a butchers underneath while you turn her over - exhaust banging against the chassis is a common problem as theres not a lot of clearance in some areas.
