This is an update to the Severe Weather Warning that was issued by Metcheck on Wednesday 15th December, this update issued at 13:03 on Tuesday 21st December 2010.
The current cold spell is expected to continue over the next few days with widespread, sharp night frosts bringing widespread icy surfaces.
Further snow showers will continue to affect coastal areas in the north and east during the next 24 hours, bringing further accumulations of 5-10cm in places, particularly across northern and eastern Scotland.
Meanwhile, there is the potential for outbreaks of snow to develop over parts of Ireland, Wales, northwest England, eastern England, the Midlands and inland areas of East Anglia later on Tuesday and into Wednesday. Much of the snow will be on the light side, but some heavier outbreaks may result in accumulations of 5-10cm falling in some areas.
With temperatures falling well below freezing by night and struggling to rise above freezing during the day, widespread icy surfaces can be expected, especially on untreated areas whilst snow will bring further disruption with it.
These wintry conditions will make for hazardous travelling conditions, so please allow extra time and take extra care if you are travelling during this period. Please check with the Highways Agency for further advice regarding traffic disruption on main roads.
This Severe Weather Warning will be updated tomorrow, Wednesday 22nd December 2010.
