Right guys first off this is not another "How do I make a snorkel thread?" :augie

I am planning on building my own snorkel (probably 3" stainless) but there are plenty threads on DIY snorkels, here and on the patrol4x4 and nissanpatrol.au forums so how to put it together isn't worrying me overly... yet! :lol

My question is about snorkel heads - what are the benefits/disadvantages of a ram head vs a mushroom head? (had a wee look on google but couldn't find a proper "vs" comparison)

Also just a wee query, but how have folk fixed the snorkel to their windscreen pillars?

I looked into the types of head, and like you could not really find any real pro's or Con's of either type.

The only thing I did find was 2 things.

Firstly, the early snorkels were actually designed to be used in dusty environments, and to reduce the amount of dust entering an engine, in sandy and dusty environments, rather than for water wading.

Secondly, originally the cone tops were designed to have a pre-filter fitted in the top, so they were better for dusty environments, and were supposed to be easier to clean daily, without having to delve into the engine bay and have to keep changing that one. Basically designed for an in the field Soldier to maintain.

I think since then they have been found to logically also work for wading, which as an environment is less likely to have the same dust issues, and the top has then basically evolved for looks rather than functionality.

Therefore, it's down to personal choice. and the pro's and con's come down to how high above the roof they are, how wet it is where you go, and what you want.

Not sure on the Patrol, where you fix to, but in the T2, I made specifically bent stainless steel brackets that fit under the windscreen trim. I have pictures if it would help, just don't know anything about Patrol.

I can already see this turning into the forward or backward facing debate :augie

Mine is held on with a jubilee as tight as it will go we the head slotted onto the pipe but in reality a good heavy yank and it will come off.

Mine now faces forwards, I imagine the cone ones are quite good, also also eliminates the forward backwards debate too :naughty

Facing backwards also helps reduce possible damage from the head on tight overgrown lanes.

I am coming to the conclusion that the head needs to be rotatable. Forward for normal use and backwards when off road or in heavy rain or dust. :thumb2
I don't like the look of the upside down flower pot, but that may be as it is often on a l-r. :lol

Thanks lads, quite fancy putting a mushroom head on tbh, reminds me a bit of a tractor air intake (I know you can get glass bowl filter snorkel tops but I reckon that'd be a bit too far! :lol).

Thanks Fez, yeh think rivnuts will be the way to got. Lazyferret if you could get some pics of your brackets that'd be awesome so I can see an alternative to the rivnuts :thumb2

For mine, I removed the rubber runs up the side of the windscreen, exposing the metal under it. I then used the screws that held the metal plate on. I was going to use Rivnuts, but didn't need to in the end.

Edited to add, I then put the rubber back, with out having to cut it, which is why the bracket has quite so many bends in it.

ARB austrailia did some research and the forward facing "Ram type" can in the right environment produce around 2 psi of pressure at 100kph.

Good pic Clive, I remembered what you said about using a magnet as you still to catch the metal filings, otherwise rust will form quickly and eat the truck

I have just tried to take pictures of the snorkel fitting. It is a "wave" shaped bracket, 2 bolts to the snorkel and 3 blind rivets to the pillar.

Cheers Clive and Ian, really useful to see :thumb2

Done some checking of inlet sizes for the Y61 and it looks like 3.5" diameter will be a better size - if only it wasn't Xmas soon I'd have bought the bits already! :lol
