Here’s a word of warning from someone who should have known better.
I own a 1996 Terrano 2.7tdi intercooler fly-by-wire with a Hitachi MAF sensor.
Up until 3 years ago I have been a mechanic/fitter in many guises.
Two weeks ago the Terrano started to loose revs and white/grey smoke, it would run ok for around a minute then it would choke and not rev over 2500rpm while smoking heavily without the engine management light coming on, it then cleared and happened a week later and this time did not clear, so I started to investigate.
Anyway after many hours 30+ I have checked every sensor, and voltages replaced the MAF sensor, and on the recommendation of a friend at Nissan the (cpu) temp sender, I had removed both injection pump banjos (and by the way I don’t think this model has a small filter in the pump after many hours fishing for it.).
Anyway I should have known with 30years experience to start at the basics, it was only by chance I had noticed the plunger on the fuel primer had dipped after I had had the fuel line off, so I removed the feed pipe to the filter to hear a suction noise, right away I removed the tank sender unit and found waxy residue blocking the stand pipe.
Once cleaned it ran like a dream.
So before you jump in at the deep end like me make sure you have checked the basics fuel and air.
I hope this saves someone time and expense.
