Hello all. We've just bought a Terrano II 2.7TD SLX LWB, 1993.

It started first time at the garage with no smoke last week. Test drive was fine but a further start of the engine produced a small amount of blue smoke on startup.

We brought it home today and the smoking has got worse. First it was smoking when started, then at idle / runover, and now it looks like a mobile barbecue - again, blue smoke.

This has all happened in the 30 miles we have driven it so far.

There is no loss of power.

The oil level is still at the top.

The temperature is fine.

What we do see however is oil/minute droplets of water escaping from the rocker cover gasket immediately above the glow plug nearest the front of the vehicle.

Pressure is also being released from the radiator cap and is noticeable by the hissing - however the water level is fine with the expansion bottle sat above the maximum level on a hot engine.

I was thinking head gasket with water from the rocker cover gasket, but why no overheating?

UPDATE:

We've just had a diesel mechanic look at it and it's now pumping out white smoke.

His verdict is that it's been doctored for a sale and that it's a complete pup!

Cheers

Sounds like you need to go back to where you bought it from, was it a private sale or a garage?

Check the inside of the oil filler cap for a pale coloured emulsion nick named Mayonaise. If you have this there is water in the oil which may well be head gasket.
However the water on the front of the engine could be a leaking water pump, usual tell tale of this is a small water mark on the floor in the centre.

Have a look on this link and see if it is familiar http://www.nissan4x4ownersclub.co.uk/workshop/wk3.pdf

I'm sure you will get more replies as well as mine.

PS just checking but have you filled it upo since buying it? check that it is diesel and not petrol.
