Are we talking under load at a wide throttle opening?????

First port of call, check the air cleaner, and all the pre-turbo hoses for collapsing under suction or restriction.

Any pictures of maf egr and prices/were to get them as I don't even know what they look like. I would say under load as its when excelarting

Haven't noticed anything when tickling it

Easiest thing to test first is the turbo and or egr, remove a hose after the turbo and rev the engine hard with your hand over the hose, you should feel a pressure more than the outlet of a good vacuum cleaner it should take a bit of effort to keep it covered, if not a lot comes out ether the turbo has gone or the egr is stuck wide open or the air is coming out elseware, have a good look round and use your ears, re the maf it is a black plastic block with a wiring connector block on it someware on the inlet pipes, it will have a wire element, if it is dirty swish it in a tin of petrol, do not touch the wire, someware in the manual is a test for the maf with a multimeter, but I would go for lack of turbo as the most likely, unless it is running rough then I would be looking injectors, when was the fuel filter done last and do you use station derv or other stuff, Rick

I'm on morrisons diesel and I have had the car about 8 week I think and not done the fuel filter yet as I don't know how

are you sure it's not just blowing out the cob webs, because mine is the same and it runs perfectly, just passed the smoke test, and as we use our truck around town alot, i give it some stick now and again just to clear it out..:nenau

i have the complete y61 service manual stored in my documents , but i dunno how to send it to you , or post it on here for that matter :nenau

as suggested before, clean air filter and passageways :thumb2

Then if as already mentioned its the cobwebs, try sticking in a jug of millers diesel power booster. As a cleaner that produces some excellent results.

One of our local taxi firms if a car fails or looks like its going to fail on emmisons stick some of that through on a mega dose. usually works. Shifts the crap :thumb2

Theres loads of support on various other diesel powered forum threads for this product but just to reintroduce an old discussion theres also support for chucking acetone in as a boost/cleaning agent :naughty

i seem to remember someone told me black smoke is a sign of unburnt fuel , is that correct ?

Black smoke from an exhaust are hydrocarbons which I thought was burnt fuel, too much of it :nenau

Having said that i did physics so chemical concoctions are a mystery to me :doh

might have got it the wrong way round then lol

Black smoke is unburnt fuel, what also happens is because diesels run at a lower exhaust temperature especially round town, small amounts of unburnt fuel mix with the carbon on the inside of the exhaust, then when you give it some welly and the pipes get a rush of gas hotter than of late, this fuel is vaporised and comes out as black smoke, all normal unless the smoke continues, Rick

and if the smoke continues???????

where do i buy a maf and how much.. i looked on eday and this is all i found Item number: 350375565057 sadly its not for the 2.8 or i would have bought it just to eliminate the maf as a probable cause...

i used to love my bus

If the smoke continues, and it is running nice and even then most likely turbo related, turbos are very reliable today, so first to check is egr common for ss pipe to split so loosing your turbo pressure, I have a spare MAF Hitachi AFH55M-11 but it was from a petrol so unlikely to fit, but give yours a clean first, Rick

were is the egr located and were is the maf? to clean the maf is it just a mater of cleaning connectors?

thanks larson
