So......question is this.

I can't see any drain holes for the main sills...can anyone who has welded or exposed them tell me if they are in fact a 'sealed' unit, i.e. they rust from the outside in and have no ventilation?

There is a reason for asking but I'm not about to embarrass myself.:augie

i need to weld mine and was thinking of spraying something in there before welding, so i would like to know also..

Well I have a hole in my 02-plate which pi55e5 me off. I think its the result of some older damage, completely localised, but not sure whether to fill the thing with expanding foam and fill, or get it welded. Latter would be slightly painful as its an awkward contour right in front of the rear arch.

The best person to ask is "tommo" as he cut his out & replaced with box section which is what i will do in the summer as it will be a built in rock slider & farm jacking point :sly :naughty :thumbs

PM him as his not on 24/7 :thumbs

DO NOT USE EXPANDING FOAM AS IT WILL HOLD WATER & THEN ROT FROM THE INSIDE OUT :doh

Can't be of any help till i cut mine

whilst crawling under mine (02) defo saw drain holes on inside of my sills.

Certainly the Mk 1 has 4 drain points to the sills, I have just had a look at the two I cut off the scrapper to go on mine when I get round to it, Rick

not sealed,

drain out at leading bottom corner of rear arches.

no idea how it gets in as heard it swoshing around
sounded like a wave machine.

used to weep out and on to back end of steps.

its a sort of square hole. metal coat hanger straightened
out should poke it nicely, stand back if havent got wellies
on though.

the hole to the front behind the front flaps dont drain sills but area
behind front flaps, which drains down from front of bulk head and
i think the sunroof drains...

classically you poke them and seem clear but theres a lump of crap
higher up stopping the drainage, which is when it can flow over and
into foot wells.

Hmmm couldn't see anything there, better go and crawl around in the frost :(

They are there, they are rectangular slots on the bottom edge, easily found if you look at the cill from the chassis side, you will see the inner cill has 1" wide vertical impressions in it, at the bottom of these there is a small slit, which can be cleared with a large plastic ty wrap, a metal coat hanger will cause scratches and rust. :doh

The sun roof does drain into this area.
If you remove the plastic scuff plate, ( 4 plastic screws) you can get a light and shine it forward and see the rubber grommet and pipe coming out in the cill.
You can also remove the rear one ( 5 door version) and look at the state of the inner cill.

I hope that shines some light on it..:lol :lol
