silicon sealant and maf

My last maf died not long after doing my snorkel, it cased massive overfueling, black smoke and starting issues. replaced it last month and was instantly fine again, but has got worse over last 3 weeks or so since replacing it and started smoking bad and missing again on start up.

Google suggests that using domestic silicon bathroom sealer in your airbox is a no-no as it kills your maf.

Could this have caused my maf to die ?

Have any of you used silicon, pre maf, in your induction system ?

the curing process of silicon sealer used to be very acid, hence 'neutral cure' sealer as an alternative, however it is said that in modern sealants the balance of acid is 'correct' and so they shouldn't cause anything like (if any at all) the corosion problems of the old stuff.


does the wire look corroded? :nenau

depending what sealer you used, but many give off acetic acid on curing and in the confines of the inlet pipes could get very strong, I think the windings on the maf are stainless or silver nichrome , someone better than me may well be able to say if acetic is aggressive to the wires, Rick

but - as i said - once cured (in modern silicon sealers, even normal sanitary stuff) there shouldn't be a problem from the acid. So, personaly I don't think it is your issue :nenau

agreed, and I do not even know if it would have been aggressive to the wire anyway, so if not that what could have caused his maf failure, maybe it just needs a clean? Rick
