My Aluminium side steps/running boards are very grubby, Oil & tar stained, generally a bit grotty looking. They are heavily ridged one's so it makes it hard to get in to all the grooves. I have tried jiff and a pan scrub but this just got rid of the worst bits ,most of the stains are still there.
I wonder if any body has any good cleaning tips I can try

Tar and Glue remover, comes in a bottle from most accessory shops. Pour it on neat and may be give it a helping hand with a scrubbing brush. It's solvent specially made to remove the stuff from cars.

When I was going through all the hassles of trying to re-stick my plastic side panels, I came across a lot of things that removed all sorts of stuff.

Brake cleaner is superb for removing practically everything... including paint, so be careful.

Halfrauds sell a plastic preparation spray in the paint section, that is for preparing plastic Polypropylene parts to take a layer of paint. Not sure what the solvent is in it, but that stuff really does shift any traces of oil.

Petrol and Methylated spirits is also good for tar (not mixed).

And then the best cleaner you can get for general grime, neat Cillit Bang.... that stuff shifts practically everything, Bugs, oil, wheel brake dust, it even gets the black streaks off of the Caravan.

Thanks for the info ,cant get cillit bang here but will try the brake cleaner , cheers !
