can anyone tell me how the side air vents come out . as I went to turn the little wheel to change the direction and all the fins fell out and I can't get them to stay in

On mine, they just pull straight out. I put a bit of plastic across the dash, so as not to bruise the padding and create a lever point, and used a large flat bladed screwdriver to lift the bottom edge, and it just popped straight out.

The fins are a tad fragile (don't even think about using a vent-mounted phone holder), all four vents on mine either had missing fins when I bought the car, or they fell out later.
I bought some used complete vents from a breaker.

Unless they have been out before and the lugs are broken you have got no chance of getting the whole vent out without breaking it.

surely the vent front that's on the dash panel should come away from the vent duct behind the dash by the glove box , how else would Nissan put it together . I have looked on manual and that shows the pipe work behind the dash but no front vent with the fins ?

Yes it does but the combination of the vent being very tight in the dash and 4 clips that hold it there makes it impossible to remove without breaking it.Ive had full dash out before and still find them difficult to remove. The way i remove them on breakers is hacksaw the dash and prise it open to pop the vent out
