Looking for someone who can look at a leaking swivel hub for me in the Sheffield area (or within an hour or so).
Patrol has failed it's MOT and my normal garage don't know enough about them to tackle it bar recommending a full axle replacement which seems a bit excessive!

Even someone with a bit of know-how to look at it and tell me exactly what needs to be done would be a massive help!

To be honest dude, it sounds like your garage just can't be bothered!:nenau

Full axle replacement is NOT required.

It sounds like they've not identified a knackered swivel bearing to cause it (these can lead to movement which causes the axle seal to leak) so it sounds like the axle seal has just given up the ghost.

Note, this is the seal the sits around the driveshaft on the inside of the axle not the seals on the swivel (I had a garage once only replace the swivel seals even though I had said it was the seal inside the axle :doh).

By all accounts easy to replace although it's one of the things I've not done myself yet due to other things so far getting in the way at the time. I know Patrolman has done it before and I believe you just drain the axle oil, remove the wheel, whip out the upper and lower swivel bearings and then remove the hub and drive shaft in a oner. Pick out the old seal, whack the new one in, replace the drive shaft/hub assembly, replace the swivel bearings, refit wheel and refill axle :thumb2

I think he's just uncomfortable working on larger 4x4's but he's genuinely helpful and willing to put effort in most of the time.
This seems to have him rattled.

I've got it through the MOT but would like to take it to someone to sort for me as I just don't have the time, or the ability to have it apart on the drive and potentially his a stumbling block which puts both the car and drive out of action!

Rob hit the nail on the head, if you can use spanners then seal is no problem, Rick

Yes that is the seal, but while you are stripping this lot down you might just as well replace the large seals that protect the swivel hub and make sure you have a tin of grease for the CVJ inside, it will love some new grease, if you have been wading then expect some wear on the top and bottom swivel bearings, you may need to remove a shim or two, but keep them as you will need them if in the future new bearings are needed, Rick

Did you get sorted?
I know someone very decent in Sheffield if you're stuck.

I can do it on my drive if you get the parts. I’m in Preston tho [emoji23] it’s actually not that hard you just need a few good tools [emoji1009]
