Our Caravan Club insurance states, if 'van left unattended for more than 8 hours
it should be secured by either a hitchlock, wheel clamp, chain or tracking device
though they don't appear to stipulate which or a quality of.

Previously I have only used a hitchlock, usually just a locking pin in coupling head
and a 'ball' filler. sometimes an outer guard 'box' lock too.

With new van going to add a wheel clamp for improved visuals, and I believe it
has an alarm fitted to the hitch lock already featured.

Been looking at a tracking device, in Towsure, the Metis uses gps and texted you
if movement occurs. Appears you can ask it if ok too which sounds handy, at £359
and no subscription needed other than topping up its sim card sounds reasonable
especially if can get upto 25% off premium, key word upto!

Any thoughts / users out there. Going for a simple to install ( quick ) clamp as
recommended by Plank in the Bulldog Euro for ease at motorway stops, at home
and on site.

hi rbrt, my insurance company only state that a wheel clamp or hitch lock have to be used, personaly (and this is just my opinion) i think it's a waste of money to pay out for all this extra security as if the thieves want it bad enough they will take it. best to buy the best wheel clamp and hitch lock you can afford. :thumb2

Ive also got a post, with the ball on the top, bulldog one i think, fits into the ground. and the hitch lock locks it to the post. its not this one, Ive the one without a lock on, just twists to come out, but you cant do that with the caravan locked on it

Frankly at 10 years old hoping it wont attract the attention a newish twin would
but you never know and like the truck is precious to us insure or not very much
personal property like anyone elses.

Guess fine line between concern and paranoia? As said will never stop a pro but
got to put off opportunist.

Thinking of other little cheap mods like removing the 12N cable, even using a socket
in gas locker with a grove for cable in way mains cable goes into battery boxes.

Heard of putting post code on van roof, but occurs when away folks have a good
clue where you're from.

Other thought is a ground anchor so could use on rally fields maybe too.

If its easy enough the little "****" will have it a way

just slow them down is best you can do.

potentially as when away your more relaxed, safety in numbers etc.

on some cc rallies we have had unwanted visitors trawling field, obviously
we look out for each other but cant know everyone to determine not
fellow members.

was also suggeting that home could get done over cos they know your away!

you would think the sites would ,

have a time block of when you can arrive and the same for departure.

that way you can only come in or leave between 8am - 5pm and they have someone there to sign vans in and out with there respective towing vehicles. if you need to leave out of these time its a fee of 30.00 to get them checked

not that i know !

but im guessing all caravans have id tags or etching all over them. cars certainly do


the sites have someone there to take your money.
i would hope they have to show you the safety points , like fire points, water, first aid and so on. much the same as if you start a job somewhere

so to have a quick look around when your set up would be a good idea

how many people discover a problem just before setting off, and just bodge it to get away.... you could be sited next door to someone who has bodged there gas supply ..............

we put on the hitch lock then. never leave it unlocked.

My insurance states that a hitchlock AND wheelclamp to be fitted when storing, a hitchlock when holidaying and when towing, the towcar and caravan should not be left unattended for more than 1hr (don't know how they would prove that).

I have gone for the "Belt & Braces" approach and fit both wheelclamp & hitchlock wherever the caravan is.

I've been looking at the security tracker devices on ebay for an entirely different reason, however they are not as expensive..& also you can set up your own perimeter, & then the clever little device will text you if it goes through it..& then you can track it on google earth...prices range from £140+

well just bought a bulldog euro, and a set of lck nuts in case not already fitted.

euro seems a relatively lightweight solution 10 seconds to install, ideal for short
stops enroute. had been looking at one called nemisis but not for touring, weighs
a ton and bulky too. maybe more for storage security.

as stored at home plan to have hooked up to mains to keep gently warm and
fridge ready chilledand battery topped up so alarm will be ON.

we keep ours just out side teh front door. Like i said locked to a hitch post, didnt think of hooking it up though, could use the baby alarm we dont use.
