Hi guys, I have my second alternator ready to fit BUT I am not sure if the smaller terminal needs connecting to anything.
I have spun the alt with my screwdriver and a socket adaptor but do not seem to be getting anything out voltage wise.:doh:doh
First of all need to be sure it works, it came from CNCFABS so am sure it was checked

Any help gratefully accepted and yes I will do pictures:bow:bow

you will need to connect a small lamp (~2W) to the IND terminal for the internal regulator to work.
The other connection on the lamp should be the the battery +VE.

Two alternators ?

Why two alternators rather than one more powerful one ?
Is one for a completely seperate battery with no common wiring ?

correct I currently have a relay to charge the second battery I think a second will be better all round
there will be pictures

Thanks for the update, I had used a trickle charger to give me the 12 volts to the bulb and alternator.
I will get the spare battery from the Mav in the morning, into the workshop and try again.
I wanted to check all was working before the struggle to get the aircon mount and the alternator in place
Watch this space pictures may be coming soon

Still trying to find a QD32 breaking somewhere so I can get the bigger alternator and bolt that one in place of the 70a Terrano one

How was Rick getting on with the Shogun one was it that he was trying to get working

it is still sitting on the bench, no time to play, Rick

Thanks for the input guys, battery wired in parallel, lamp goes out screwdriver almost stalls 0.1 volts above battery voltage, so all systems got for fitting the alternator over the weekend.:thumbs:thumbs

Alternator open circuits ?

I may have a problem, I seem to be getting 20 volts from the alt, it is not connected to a battery, does it need the battery load to help control the output
I have put some pictures on the facebook site

But not with the voltmeter
Pictures are easier to put on facebook

Just something I learnt when alternators first started to come on the market - it is not a good idea to run them without a battery / load connection. Not sure what it does but I suspect if it has an integrated rectifier it could destroy it or cause it to malfunction.

Yes they do have a built in regulator and rectifier, and I imagine with no battery to charge e regulating would go through the roof, certainly on motorbikes the reg recs would die, perhaps with no battery you could strain this on the alt? :nenau

Ohh interesting, I've been debating this for my build as my winch is 24v so was thinking of putting in a 2nd alternator for the winch batteries and have the other one as normal.....any chance of pics or a write up?

pictures and write

Yep I will do lots of pictures
Basically I have a aircon bracket and belt adjuster and a TDi alternator I got from CNCFABS
My battery will go over the N/S front wing behind the headlight, its been there a couple of years being powered by a relay running off the Alt warning light
Building work got in the way this weekend so may be next weekend before I fit it all together, need to take the radiator out to get to the aircon bracket position
