Hi All

I have found a small area of rust in the drivers side door frame. There is now a small (about 5mm dia) hole around an area of bubbling about 30mm.

Whats the best way to sort it - get it professionally repaired - if so, how much?

Or would it be better to paint it with rust stop and hope that it gets now worse.

Also what is the best way to stop rust from starting in the first place?

Alot of questions but i hope you all can help!

Regards
Lee

As you probably know the major component of steel is iron. All iron when it comes into contact with oxygen will return to its 'natural' state i.e. iron oxide (rust). Our vehicles of course are treated and painted to prevent the steel from coming into contact with oxygen. Once this protective layer is broken somehow the dreaded tin worm can take hold.
I dont think there is really anything you can do to (further to what the manufacturer does) prevent rust other than deal with it quickly if you discover any. To treat rust you need to get rid of it by using a heavy wire brush on a drill or angle grinder...get the area surrounding the rust back to clean metal....if a hole appears as a result patch it using aluminium mesh and body filler...then prime and finally paint.

Sadly no. It is about 10cm above the door hinge.

if the hole is near the door hinge get it repaired properly, ie cut rust out, and weld plate on, then use underseal or waxoyl inside, fill, prime and paint outside. :thumb2

Like Tezzer said, cut out the rust and weld in some good metal, don't bodge with filler or glass fibre etc anywhere, let alone around a load bearing area like a door hinge. Its easy enought to do the job right first time, saves doing it again in a year or so when it inevitably rusts through again. With serviceable MIG welders available from as little as £99 these days theres no excuse, they soon pay for themselves.
