hello all, have just had to replace my old nissan terrano with a slightly newer one (old one-'97 new one-'01) as i've mentioned in another thread. Was a bit of a hurried purchase (my old one was written off by someone driving into the side of it, but thats another story...) as I need a jeep for work and it had a new mot so I didnt check underneath thoroughly for rust. When I got it back home I found it had more rust on sills etc. than my old one so booked it in with a local welder. He called me when he'd got it on the ramps to tell me he'd found more rust and suggested I get it mot'd to find out the full extent of what needs doing (the last mot was done by the trader which sold it to me and looks to have been a bit lenient..)
I got it MOT'd straight away and they put advisories (as it does not yet affect steering or brakes) on both rear inner and outer sills, both front inner and outer sills and both rear box sections behind the wheels for being excessively corroded. It also failed on a leaking fuel pipe (which may have developed since the last mot).
So now i'm pondering whether get the repairs done (as the rust will get worse if not dealt with) and hope theres no more nasty surprises or try to get a refund as the rust was obviously there when it was mot'd a couple of months back and wasnt even mentioned as an advisory. Wondering if anyone has had any similar experience as I dont really know when its time to 'quit while i'm ahead' with rust on these (my '97 one was pretty solid). Thanks, Rob S

Hi, a bit difficult with the rust only being advisories. Sadly the newer trucks do suffer badly from the tin worm. Not sure what they mean by rear box sections tho?

Sills shouldnt be a killer to get done and of course if you get old ones cut out and replaced with new full panels. Once theyre done theyll not go again. Had my sills patched several times until last year took mine to a bloke in Barnsley as soneone on here recommended him to me. He fabricated whole new inner and outer sills complete with centre body mounts for less than £300. Theyll never need repairing again. My rear sills were done a couple of years ago too.

Check your rear seat belt mounts, the nut and bolt inside the rear wheel arches as they tend to rot out.

If the rest of the car is fine mechanically then Id be tempted to get it repaired.
