K, here goes guys...

Have just noticed a squeaky noise, consistent with road speed, from the rear of our 03 Terrano 3.0 sport. It's most obvious when pulling away, and stops when I ease off the power and allow it to coast. Does it in 2- and 4-wheel drive.

It's like a fast squeaky-squeaky kind of rubbing sound(!) It's coming from underneath, but I can't tell if it's from the diff area or the transfer box area.

Anyone have any ideas? The only thing I had time to check (other than general security of things under the car) was the rear diff oil level, which is fine.

Thanks in advance guys

Are you sure of it's location?

The spare wheel brackets break some spot welds on the inner skin of the tailgate and makes a noise just like what you describe. One or two people on here have used self tappers or bolts through the two skin sections and bracket. Mine seems to go in winter and come back in summer.

I had a squeek once when my mav was fairly new, I brushed waxoyl on all of the suspension bushes ball joints, springs etc. Never came back and the vehicle is now 13 years old.
OR it could be the exhaust clamp (Ubolt) at the back of the gearbox, the nuts have a habit of coming loose, putting another 8mm nut on top and locking them cures this.
Hope this helps, best regards, Rustic

I'm 99.99% sure it's drivetrain, because of the way it's consistent with the application of power. I read on another thread about greasing the UJs - maybe worth trying I think. Do they have grease nipples, or is it just a case of good old-fashioned finger application?

Yes they do have grease nipples, one for each joint. If you grab hold of the prop shaft you can usually feel any play.
The gearbox end of the shaft has a sliding joint into the gearbox (transfer box) so there may be a very slight bit of play in the shaft at the gearbox.
"NOT A LOT"
To grease the front shaft (2 nipples) you will have to remove the lower cover/tray under the engine /gearbox.
4 bolts at the rear, 3 on the front metal "sump guard" as they share these.
You may also need to slacken the bolts at the front of the sump guard to give some clearance. Bolt size is M6 so use a 10mm socket.
If you rotate the shaft to get to the nipples on the front shaft, you will probably partially engage the front hubs.
If so you may have to reverse back a metre and then forward again.
Hope this helps.
best regards, Rustic

Errrm, now I may missing something, but after an extensive underbody search, I've been unable to locate any nippleage of a greasing variety. And here's me with a shiny new cartridge of goo.

So is it possible that on my later car grease points have been done away with?

Latest noise news is that it's stopped doing it. I think the car was just chucking a sicky so it didn't have to do its normal 80 mile daily round trip. Mrs Pigglet took Mr Piglet's Focus which behaved very nicely.

Will continue to monitor...
