hi,

summer hols sees us on new ground mid west wales.

will be on m54 to telford then a5 shrewsbury bypass,

heading toward newtown, google maps and by satnav
give the a470 then a44 but aware there are 2 northern
routes, either the a487 or a487 and a470.

looking for incline and width advise, know cant always
trust an a road, as been along a39 north devon! with
its hairpins etc.

reckon a487 follows route of railway so presume slightest
inclines.

also bering in mind will be first saturday of english summer
hols which route will be least congested, crystal balls at
ready please.

btw its not so much for me, believe troll will take our van
anywhere, but also have inlaws tagging along with their
scenic and 'van.

Keep to the main trunk road to Newtown, and then follow the A44 to llangurig.

Don't turn right at Caersws !!

ok, thanks so thats stick to main drag of a44 then,
take it the right at caersws is the 470, what of the
a458 right turn at welshpool and and then down the
489/487.

the site we are heading for is south of the city, off
the 487/485, and note we can miss city centre if
come in on 44, the a4120 i think via retail parks?

No no no, I often drive Llangurig to Newtown and really think you should go off at Caersws:sly
Best chance I've got to keep the van somewhere else:lol and you get to see the sea quicker:augie

i was going to say something that silly and now you have spoiled it :(

aww guys thanks you are all heart.

cant see any gradient indicators on the main routes, though
that a44 seems to have some squigglby bits, guess can always
used street view on google maps.

Perhaps I read the OP wrong- but if I was towing a 'van, the last thing I would want to do would be go the Caersws-Macynthlleth route...

I spent 3 yrs commuting between Aber and Clun Valley!

Nice one timbo, least someone has my interest at heart.

its an area never been and of course all roads look equal
on a map.

Of course the scenery could be viewed as 'nicer' on the Mac route, but it would be a complete b1t*h to actually drive, more so with a plastic love shack on the hook, but if you have a whole day and in no rush, and dont care about irrate drivers who cannot get past you when you are at 20mph, then why not......

isn't that what caravans do? LMAO!

Thomas-the-Terrano2,

Good luck with the holiday and route finding. I am towing my van to Llanberis next week and have similar concerns about the route. Bit wimpy really, but I have only been caravanning for a year and don't want to be anywhere that isn't wide enough for two viehicles. Reversing with a 23ft caravan is not something I relish doing on those 'stone wall' lined passes.

I have been using Google Earth to take a look at the types of roads, which has worked before.

As for all the irate drivers behind me as I wend my way through this green & pleasant land (which probably applies to North Wales) at a sensible pace, all I can say is you should have left earlier. Beep your horn, shake your fist/finger and flash your lights all you want... I'm on holiday!! :)

Alan

if ever your stuck behind a caravan you know it's because there is a little old lady in her morris minor holding the caravan up, not the caravan going too slow! :lol
