Replacing UJ's on Rear Propshaft

What a nightmare!!!!

I get under, jack the back of the car up as to not lose any gearbox oil, undo the 4 bolts, pull it out, beautiful :thumb2

Get to try and remove the clips and they are ALL and I mean ALL seized in soild, broke two sets of circlip removers trying and also tried the screwdriver method and nothing!! They are the ones that sit on top of the head of the caps if you know what I mean, I'd have posted a pic but my phones broke and I don't own a camera :doh

Is there any way of removing these without a press or a vice, or is it impossible to get them out without removing the circlips?

I don't care about damaging them as I have a new set with each UJ

My rear UJ was well and truly goosed, I was rotating it about on it's yoke and all the roller pins were falling out as rusty dust, the movement on the joint was ridiculous!!!!!!!

Imagine if this solved my low revs rattle, god wouldn't that be a treat, I wouldn't have to swap the axle then *says a little prayer* :bow:bow:bow:bow:bow:bow:bow

Sorry i have never had to do that job:) But i have heard of many horror stories of swapping the rear axle.(Could end up with worse than you have now.
 
The heads might be too close to the clips making it more difficult. Try bashing the heads inwards to see if that helps.

You will need a vice or press to install the new UJ in anyway. I have heard of people hammering them in but the needle bearings are more likely to fall out.

Surely the vice will have enough force to pop it out even with the circlips in?

i dont think a vice will push the circlips out.
i would get it warmed up and have another go wth pliers, punch, hammer

Rear axle is easy swap provided its the right ratio
 
If yu wentn't so far away I would say take it to P&J propshafts, they fix & change everything to do with them. but theres gotta be somewhere like that near you
 
hammer and drift on the circlips, do not try and push the cups out with clips still in you will damage the yolks, then you will need another shaft, Rick
 
to be honest any garage will be able to change them for you, Rick

I found it easier to bash the circlips with a very sharp chisel to brake them as i also broke my circlip pliers trying to get them out.

I did a write up in the download section.

Yes you will need either a vice or a hydraulic press to push the UJs out.

Make sure also that you mark the ends of the prop and UJs so they go back matching ends as the prop is balanced and not putting it back with the correct positioning could cause it to be out of balance...

Were your circlips at the top on top of the cap or were they inside the yoke?
 
Sorry am not sure i understand what you mean....the circlips sit inside a recess just inside the yoke, securing the UJ caps

What an absolute mare of a job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Horrible Horrible Horrible Horrible probably the most fiddly job I've had to do on the car, and it looked so simple

If anyone is going to attempt this job I can't stress enough the importance of a good set of circlip pliers and a vice

After about 3-4 hours of struggling, swearing, filing and picking up the needle bearings, cleaning out the cups and re-inserting them and re-applying grease we finally managed to get one end repaired and a new UJ fitted however I was unable to fit the other one as we had to use some circlips from that pack and also 2 of the cups as we damaged the originals on the first one so I've now ordered a new one from Milners

My mate also managed to buckle the flimsy metal cover that I can only presume stops grub and mud getting into the transmission however that is now catching inside when spinning so I'm going to need to straighten that out
next time it's off

It was painstaking, getting the cups back into the holes true, de-burring the holes with a round file and trying again :doh :(

Again, Horrible!!!! I don't envy you if you have to do this job any time soon, you'll understand why when you try
 
sorry you had such problems, but it really is so easy, I have done many and 20 minutes would be average, but I guess to some one who has not tackled one before it could be a problem, first thing you do is with a drift, drive the first cup into the cruciform, so giving the circlip some play then it comes out easy, same on the rest then just press out, only ever used a vice, no need for more, Rick

You guys must have had nice ones, mine was seized to f**k!!!

Hopefully when my new one comes it should be quite easy as we have made a few mistakes now so should have learned some lessons
 
Got round to fitting my new one last night and boy was it fooooooked!!!!! :eek:
I was getting rattles, bangs, smacks and vibrations at high speeds

After the palava last time and lessons learned this one took me 45 mins on my own :)
